A high-voltage one-day international clash between India and the West Indies is set to begin alongside the ongoing Asian Games. The West Indies squad has arrived in India for a bilateral assignment that features a three-game ODI series. The opening fixture of this contest is scheduled to take place in Thiruvananthapuram on September 17. Ahead of the series opener, the Indian squad engaged in an intensive training session, putting in long hours at the nets to sharpen their preparations.
Spotlight on Senior Stars in the Nets
Much of the attention during the net session remained squarely focused on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both stalwart batters currently represent the national side solely in the one-day international format. Virat Kohli landed in Kerala recently to link up with the squad for the series. Throughout his batting drills, Kohli appeared in fluid rhythm and looked in fine touch against the bowling, while also offering technical guidance and encouragement to his fellow teammates.
Opening batsman Rohit Sharma was equally proactive and determined during his time in the nets. With every 50-over assignment carrying immense significance ahead of the ODI World Cup, Rohit approached the training session with complete seriousness, making sure no aspect of his batting preparation was taken lightly.
Captaincy Focus and Batting Contenders
Team India captain Shubman Gill spent extended hours batting against different types of bowling. Head coach Gautam Gambhir kept a watchful eye on Gill throughout the session, monitoring his technique and rhythm. Gill has been enjoying a strong run of form in recent outings, and his objective heading into this series against the West Indies will be to convert that momentum into substantial runs at the top order.
Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also took part in an extensive batting stint in the nets. However, with regular opener Rohit Sharma occupying a frontline role, the chances of Jaiswal finding a spot in the playing eleven appear minimal for the series opener.
Pace Unit Prepares for Return to Action
In the bowling department, seamer Mohammed Siraj operated at full tilt. Siraj is slated to function as India's lead pace bowler during this ODI series. Following a rather disappointing run of form in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy, there will be considerable expectations on Siraj to deliver a strong turnaround with the new ball.
Mohammed Siraj will be supported in the pace attack by Prasidh Krishna. In an official photograph shared by the BCCI prior to the contest, Prasidh Krishna was seen putting in rigorous physical effort alongside his bowling colleagues to get into peak match shape.
Spin Strategy and All-Round Depth
Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav spent hours bowling on the pitch to regain control and penetration. This net workout is particularly crucial for Kuldeep, as he has struggled to collect wickets across his last few competitive appearances and is eager to rediscover his breakthrough rhythm.
Veteran spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was likewise seen bowling regularly during the drills. Jadeja's presence in the middle order provides depth, balance, and tactical flexibility to the Indian team setup. With the series on the line, Jadeja is leaving nothing to chance as he readies himself for the upcoming challenges against the visiting side.
