An on-field confrontation during the ongoing first Test match in Colombo has resulted in financial penalties and disciplinary marks for both players involved. Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan bowler Asitha Fernando clashed during the game, prompting the International Cricket Council to take strict action. Consequently, both cricketers have been fined 25 percent of their respective match fees for the incident.
Breach of Code of Conduct
According to the International Cricket Council, both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the code of conduct, leading to Level 1 charges against them. This specific regulation deals with inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee, or any other person during an international fixture. As a result of this breach, a single demerit point has been added to the disciplinary records of both Fernando and Jaiswal. Notably, neither player had any prior offenses on their disciplinary record over the preceding 24 months.
How the On-Field Clash Unfolded
The incident occurred on the opening day of the Test match during the 17th over of India's first innings. Fernando clean bowled Jaiswal, who had been struggling to get going and score runs. As the batter was walking back toward the dressing room, he suddenly turned around and engaged in a heated argument with the Sri Lankan players. During this exchange, Jaiswal took his helmet and placed it against Fernando's head, escalating the tension between the two.
Acceptance of Penalties Without Hearing
Following the altercation, both players accepted their respective offenses and agreed to the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Because the penalties were accepted directly, no formal hearing was necessary. The charges were leveled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, alongside third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.
Understanding the Demerit Points System
For a Level 1 breach, the penalties range from an official reprimand to a maximum penalty of 50 percent of the player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within a rolling 24-month period, those points are converted into suspension points, resulting in a ban. Two suspension points equate to a suspension from one Test match, two One Day Internationals, or two Twenty20 Internationals, whichever comes first for the player. These demerit points remain active on a player's or support personnel's disciplinary record for twenty-four months from the date of imposition, after which they are expunged.
