Under the original structure, the tour comprised only a standalone Test match and a three-match ODI series. However, cricket authorities from both nations agreed to add the shorter format matches to provide optimal competitive preparation ahead of the inaugural Women's Champions Trophy scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka in February.
T20I Series Added to Boost Champions Trophy Preparation
The inclusion of the T20 International segment drastically shifts the scope of India's tour of South Africa. With the inaugural edition of the Women's Champions Trophy set to feature in Sri Lanka in early 2027, administrators recognized the vital importance of match practice in the shortest format. Adding three T20Is allows both squads to evaluate tactical combinations, middle-order depth, and pressure management against top-tier competition prior to the ICC event.
Tour Commences with Red-Ball Test Match in Gqeberha
Under the previously published schedule, the tour was set to kick off on 9 December with three One Day Internationals, followed by a solitary Test match starting 20 December at St George's Park in Gqeberha. The updated itinerary reverses this progression completely, placing the longest format right at the start. The tour will now begin on 9 December with the four-day Test match at Gqeberha running until 12 December.
This fixture follows impressive red-ball momentum for India, who recently registered a massive 270-run victory over England in their standalone Test match. Transitioning directly into test cricket on South African surfaces offers the visiting side an immediate opportunity to capitalize on their recent multi-day cricket form.
Complete Fixture List for ODIs and T20Is
Following the conclusion of the test fixture, the teams will shift focus to white-ball cricket. The ODI series opens on 16 December at Paarl, followed by the second one-dayer on 19 December at Cape Town. The 50-over leg concludes on 22 December in Bloemfontein.
The newly added T20I series gets underway shortly after Christmas on 26 December in Benoni. The action then moves to Potchefstroom, which will host the remaining two T20 games on back-to-back days, 29 December and 30 December respectively. The consecutive scheduling will test squad recovery protocols and match adaptability.
