Whenever a premier batter dominates an innings with a flurry of boundaries, sports enthusiasts naturally become curious about the equipment in their hands. During a recent match against West Indies, Virat Kohli played a phenomenal unbeaten knock of 139 runs, dispatching the ball over the ropes with nine massive sixes. This stellar performance sparked widespread interest regarding the specific type of bat that enables such powerful stroke-making.
The Unique Advantages of English Willow
Shedding light on this aspect, Shobhit Tyagi, who is associated with the sports business and has previously represented the Uttar Pradesh cricket team, shared expert insights. According to him, elite players including Virat Kohli predominantly prefer playing with English Willow bats. This specialized timber allows batters to maximize wrist movement effectively, enabling them to execute aggressive shots with precision. Pointing to the recent West Indies fixture, he highlighted how the clever use of wrists allowed the player to clear the boundary nine times with remarkable ease.
Lightweight Design and Superior Pickup
The expert explained that English Willow bats are exceptionally lightweight, making them much easier to maneuver during a high-intensity match. Their superior pickup gives players ample assistance while playing strokes, ensuring that the ball pings off the surface cleanly. These bats greatly facilitate classical shots such as cover drives, square cuts, and straight drives. Because the bat can be swung smoothly, players maintain a strong body balance, allowing them to deliver top-tier performances on the pitch.
Soaring Valuations and Craftsmanship
Discussing the specific willow used by top-tier athletes like Virat Kohli, Tyagi noted that these bats are crafted from the highest-grade timber harvested from English Willow trees. This premium quality is the primary reason behind their steep pricing, with certain specialized bats commanding figures running into lakhs of rupees. Over recent years, the preference for English Willow within professional cricket has surged exponentially. While these bats were once restricted primarily to international and domestic professionals, aspiring young cricketers are now increasingly gravitating toward them.
While many prominent athletes receive sponsored gear directly from manufacturing brands, making it difficult to put an exact retail price on those specific player-edition models, standard commercial rates apply for everyday buyers. In the bustling markets of Meerut, a quality English Willow bat generally commands a price bracket stretching from 10,000 rupees up to 2 lakhs. The sports manufacturing hub of Meerut enjoys a stellar reputation both domestically and internationally, exporting vast quantities of cricketing gear worldwide. Professional cricketers, including Mahendra Singh Dhoni during events like the IPL, frequently get their customized bats manufactured in Meerut according to their precise personal specifications and requirements.
