Melbourne Renegades have bolstered their lineup ahead of the 16th season of the Big Bash League by signing experienced New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell. The 35-year-old will represent the Melbourne-based franchise in what marks his maiden appearance in Australia's marquee T20 competition. Bracewell becomes the second overseas signing secured by the Renegades for the upcoming campaign, joining veteran England batter Jonny Bairstow on the team roster. With an established background across international and franchise cricket, the Kiwi cricketer offers valuable depth with both bat and ball to balance the squad.
International Career and Leadership Background
Bracewell earned his international debut for New Zealand in 2022 and quickly established himself across all three formats of the game. Beyond his regular contributions on the field, he has also captained New Zealand in both ODI and T20I matches. His primary asset is his versatile all-round skillset, combining left-handed power-hitting in the middle order with right-arm off-spin bowling, providing crucial tactical flexibility to his captain in diverse match situations.
Extensive Global Franchise Portfolio
Beyond international fixtures, Bracewell holds extensive experience in elite short-format leagues globally. Over a career spanning more than 200 T20 matches, he has accumulated over 3,600 runs with a career strike rate exceeding 135. As a bowler, he has claimed upwards of 100 wickets in the format. His franchise credentials include appearances in major tournaments such as the IPL, Pakistan Super League, Major League Cricket, The Hundred, and New Zealand's domestic Super Smash.
Record-Breaking Domestic Innings and Recent Form
The destructive potential of Bracewell's batting was highlighted during the 2022 Super Smash in New Zealand. Representing Wellington, he produced an unbeaten 141 off just 65 deliveries, an innings that stands as the highest individual score recorded in New Zealand's domestic T20 cricket. His impact in franchise competitions has continued in recent outings, underscored by a strike rate surpassing 170 during the 2026 Pakistan Super League campaign.
Anticipation for Melbourne and MCG Experience
For Bracewell, joining the Big Bash League represents a long-awaited milestone. Expressing his excitement about linking up with the Renegades, Bracewell stated that the BBL is an event he has followed for many years and always wanted to participate in firsthand. He noted that stepping out in front of the Melbourne crowd at the iconic MCG will provide a memorable sporting occasion in his career.
