Shreyas Iyer delivered an extraordinary batting masterclass in Lucknow, scripting numerous records into the history of Indian cricket. Stepping onto the crease after early dismissals left the team under pressure during a chase, the Indian captain turned the opening match of the five-game series on its head. Iyer remained unbeaten on 102 runs from just 43 deliveries, guiding his side across the finish line with commanding authority and securing an important 1-0 lead for India in the bilateral contest.
Historic Run-Chase Milestone for an Indian Captain
This match-winning effort made Shreyas Iyer the first Indian captain ever to score a century during a run-chase in men's T20 internationals. Prior to this knock, the highest score by an Indian skipper while chasing belonged to Virat Kohli, who compiled an unbeaten 94 against West Indies in Hyderabad back in 2019. On the global stage, the all-time record for the highest individual score by any captain in a T20I run-chase remains with Babar Azam of Pakistan, who smashed 122 runs off 59 balls against South Africa at Centurion in 2021 while pursuing a target of 204.
Joining an Elite Circle of Indian Captains
By registering his maiden century in the T20 international format, Shreyas Iyer became only the third Indian captain to hit a hundred in T20Is. He joins Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav as the sole Indian leaders to accomplish this feat. Furthermore, Iyer's onslaught represents the second-fastest hundred ever recorded against West Indies in the format, trailing only Australian batter Tim David, who reached a 37-ball hundred at Basseterre in 2025.
Among the Quickest Hundreds by Full-Member Skippers
Looking at captains from ICC full-member nations, Iyer now sits joint-third on the list of fastest T20I centuries. Only Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe, who achieved the mark in 33 deliveries, and Rohit Sharma of India, who did so in 35 balls, sit ahead of him. Moreover, Iyer has now entered the selective club of Indian batters who have reached triple digits during a T20I chase. Suryakumar Yadav holds the highest individual score in such scenarios for India with his 117 against England in 2022, and Iyer has now stamped his authority on that tally with his unbeaten 102.
Match-Winning 137-Run Stand Alongside Ishan Kishan
The turning point of the contest came courtesy of an unbroken 137-run partnership for the third wicket between captain Iyer and Ishan Kishan. This stand equaled the record for the highest third-wicket partnership for India in men's T20 internationals. It matched the 137-run stand posted by Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav against New Zealand in Trivandrum in 2026.
Boundary Blitz: 76 Runs off Just 16 Balls
Iyer relied heavily on explosive strokeplay to dismantle the bowling unit, dispatching 10 fours and sending 6 towering sixes into the stands. In total, 76 of his runs came exclusively from boundaries off just 16 deliveries. Although the West Indian bowlers attempted to keep things tight during and immediately following the powerplay, their plans fell apart once the Indian captain settled in. He took apart both spin and seam bowling with equal disdain, eventually sealing the match and completing his century with a boundary that brought the entire Lucknow crowd to its feet.
