The Indian cricket team is scheduled to tour New Zealand later this month for an extensive white-ball series. The tour will get underway with a five-match T20I contest, which will immediately be followed by a five-match ODI rubber. In the upcoming one-day series, the home team will step onto the field wearing a specially crafted kit designed to celebrate the centenary of athletic relations between the two nations. The foundation of this century-old sporting connection dates back to 1926, when the Indian Army hockey team undertook its inaugural tour of New Zealand, successfully bringing diverse athletes and communities together across both territories.
A Seamless Blend of Maori Culture and Indian Heritage
The exclusive jersey has been intricately styled to showcase elements of New Zealand indigenous Maori heritage alongside timeless Indian art forms. Officially designated by New Zealand Cricket as the Kotahitanga ODI shirt, the garment serves as a visual celebration of mutual respect, shared cultural memories, and a hundred-year friendship. The Black Caps will wear this limited-edition jersey throughout the upcoming five-match ODI assignment against India.
Collaborative Effort by Three Renowned Artists
The design of the anniversary shirt represents the joint vision of three distinct artists: Ben Thomson from New Zealand, alongside Shiv Narandas and Jay Pancha from Gujarat, India. Drawing insight from their respective ancestral traditions, the creative trio constructed a motif that reflects the historical and sporting alliance connecting both lands.
Thomson incorporated the customary Kowhaiwhai patterns of Maori art into the fabric. His portion of the design pays homage to the key figures and contributors who helped cultivate and preserve bilateral warmth over the past hundred years. Meanwhile, Shiv Narandas and Jay Pancha wove three foundational motifs of Indian artistic expression into the kit. These include India's national flower, the lotus, a repetitive rhythmic pattern inspired by traditional Indian architectural structures, and the spiritual mandala.
Tour Kickoff Slated for October 22
Glenn Critchley, Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer at New Zealand Cricket, expressed great enthusiasm regarding the commemorative concept. Critchley noted that the management is delighted with the completed look, observing that the contributing artists succeeded in striking a delicate balance between distinct Maori and Indian designs to mirror the authentic relationship shared by both nations.
Lead designer Ben Thomson explained that the central idea underlying the entire design process was unity, and the finished jersey cleanly conveys that exact sentiment. The competitive tour officially begins on October 22. When the ODI matches commence, the special kit ensures that the broadcast will highlight not only high-stakes cricket, but also a century of athletic brotherhood and deep cultural harmony between New Zealand and India.
