Australia reshuffled their red ball squad ahead of the upcoming tour of South Africa by drafting in seasoned batter Nic Maddinson and uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Sam Harper. For 34-year-old Maddinson, this call-up marks an extraordinary personal and athletic milestone following his recovery from testicular cancer treatment undergone in 2025.
Injury Setbacks Force Squad Restructuring
The adjustments became necessary after key players sustained setbacks during the recently concluded ODI assignment. Josh Inglis suffered a finger fracture that effectively ruled him out of contention for the opening Test match. A subsequent medical reassessment ahead of the second Test will determine whether Inglis can rejoin the touring party later in the series.
Meanwhile, concerns remain regarding all-rounder Cameron Green, who took a painful blow to the stomach on September 30 during the third ODI in Potchefstroom. Facing a full toss delivery from Corbin Bosch, Green absorbed the impact on his midriff, responded defiantly by striking a six off the next ball, but grimaced in obvious pain upon his immediate dismissal. Team management remains hopeful that he can recover in time for the opening clash, though he might feature purely as a specialist batter while decisions regarding his bowling workload remain deferred.
Maddinson Overcomes Health Battle to Earn Recall
Maddinson originally made his Test debut in 2016, earning three caps with his final appearance coming against South Africa. Since undergoing cancer treatment, he has yet to participate in any first-class match, having limited his appearances in the 2025-26 season to Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League and an outing for the New South Wales Second XI.
His push for national selection gained immense momentum last week when he crafted an impressive 126 runs against Victoria in the domestic One-Day Cup. Further cementing his standing within the domestic circuit, he was named Sheffield Shield captain for New South Wales last month ahead of the tournament's scheduled commencement next week. George Bailey noted that Maddinson provides vital flexibility across the batting order as they enter demanding conditions.
Harper Rewarded for Stellar Red-Ball Form
Uncapped wicketkeeper Sam Harper earned his maiden Test squad inclusion following an exceptional stint with Australia A in India. Harper registered an authoritative score of 128 runs during the second four-day fixture, capping a prolific streak that includes three centuries across his last eight first-class innings. Bailey highlighted that Harper delivers essential wicketkeeping coverage while Inglis recovers.
In positive news for the touring side, Matt Renshaw has been passed fully fit after recuperating from an injury sustained during the final ODI and is widely anticipated to open the batting in the series opener. Australia will complete a two-day warm-up fixture against a CSA Invitational XI on Saturday and Sunday in Potchefstroom before the first Test gets underway in Durban on October 9.
