A routine nighttime security sweep at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Junction in Chandauli led to a major financial seizure when railway forces intercepted a passenger carrying bundles of currency notes. The individual, who was traveling in an unreserved general compartment of the Patna to New Delhi bound Sampoorna Kranti Express, was caught carrying a backpack stuffed with currency. Failing to produce any legitimate financial documentation or accounting records to justify the transport of such a large sum, the passenger was detained alongside the recovered money.
Platform Number 7 Sweep Uncovers Suspicious Cargo
The incident unfolded on platform number 7 of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction during late-night operational duties. A joint patrolling squad consisting of the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) was carrying out regular safety inspections aboard the stationary Sampoorna Kranti Express. While examining the crowded general compartment, officers noted suspicious behavior from a male passenger. Prompted by his uneasy demeanor, the joint team stopped the traveler for direct questioning and decided to conduct an inspection of his baggage.
Rs 43 Lakh in Mixed Currency Notes Handed to Tax Authorities
Opening the commuter's backpack revealed tight stacks of Indian currency denomination notes, specifically comprising 500, 200, and 100 rupee notes. When the physical counting process concluded under the supervision of railway personnel, the exact cash amount tallied to Rs 43 lakh. The traveler was questioned regarding the origin, destination, and purpose behind carrying such substantial funds on an unreserved train carriage, but he could not offer any valid financial papers, bank receipts, or tax invoices. Recognizing the potential economic offense, railway police promptly alerted the Income Tax Department. Tax officials subsequently arrived at the junction, officially seized the entire Rs 43 lakh sum, and initiated formal inquiries into the capital's source.
Bihar Native Questioned as Investigators Suspect Hawala Channel
Police identified the detained passenger as a native of the Gaighat locality situated within the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar. Preliminary disclosures made by the individual during initial questioning have prompted investigators to suspect an illegal hawala routing network used for illicit cash transfers. CO GRP Kunwar Prabhat Singh confirmed the operational details, noting that the train was transiting from Patna toward New Delhi when the scheduled check at DDU Junction uncovered the stash. Comprehensive statutory action by the Income Tax Department remains underway to ascertain the legitimate owners of the seized funds and trace the eventual receivers.
