Opening batter Prithvi Shaw has been named captain of the Maharashtra cricket team for the opening fixtures of the upcoming Ranji Trophy campaign. The leadership role opened up due to regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad travelling with India A for an upcoming series. Because of that national duty, Gaikwad remains unavailable for Maharashtra at the start of the tournament, prompting the team management to place the captaincy in Shaw's hands following a turbulent period in his personal life.
Transition from Mumbai to Maharashtra
Shaw made the switch to represent Maharashtra in domestic cricket just last year, having previously spent his entire career playing for Mumbai. Even though he has consistently accumulated runs on the domestic circuit, a recall to the Indian national team has continued to elude him. A significant factor behind this stall has been off-field controversies and personal turmoil. Recently, Shaw went through the heartbreak of a broken engagement, parting ways with his fiancee just 6 months after they got engaged.
Proven Track Record as Under-19 World Cup Skipper
Despite his recent setbacks, Shaw has previously demonstrated sharp tactical instincts as a leader. Back in 2018, he captained the Indian team to victory in the Under-19 World Cup. That global triumph fast-tracked his career, leading directly to his senior India debut as well as lucrative IPL opportunities. While his international career initially launched with explosive promise, a lack of consistency gradually began to trouble his batting performances.
Fitness Woes and Struggles in the IPL
Persistent fitness concerns alongside off-field controversies eventually took a heavy toll on Shaw's form. Consequently, he lost his place in the Indian senior squad and struggled to attract buyers in the league circuit. During IPL 2026, Delhi Capitals bought Shaw at his base price, but he spent the entire campaign on the bench without getting a single match in the playing eleven. Leading Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy now offers him a fresh platform to re-establish his pedigree.
