The second round of matches in India's premier domestic cricket tournament, the Ranji Trophy, has reached a crucial phase as play concluded across various venues on the second day. While bowlers dominated several pitches, standout batting performances shaped the narrative elsewhere. From Karnataka asserting control against Saurashtra to Assam tightening the screws on Tripura, the contest outcomes are steadily taking definitive shape.
Karnataka builds a competitive total
In Bengaluru, riding on a brilliant maiden first-class century by Manvant Kumar, Karnataka posted a total of 342 runs in their first innings. Manvant played a stellar knock of 135 runs from 214 balls, featuring 11 boundaries and six maximums, which included remarkable hits over the cover region against experienced bowler Jaydev Unadkat. Resuming his innings overnight at 86, Manvant anchored the Karnataka innings after the team started the day at 281 for the loss of eight wickets.
Reaching his century in 147 deliveries with a boundary off fast bowler Chetan Sakariya, Manvant found solid support at the other end from Abhilash Shetty. Shetty remained unbeaten on 14 runs from 137 balls, as the pair shared a crucial 146-run partnership for the ninth wicket. Parth Bhut emerged as the most successful bowler for Saurashtra, claiming five wickets and eventually ending Manvant's impressive vigil.
Saurashtra responds before late collapse
Chasing the target, Saurashtra began strongly thanks to opening batters Hetvik Kotak, who scored 46, and Harvik Desai, who contributed 77 runs. The duo added 110 runs for the opening wicket, providing a stable foundation. However, Karnataka bowlers fought back fiercely to rattle the top order before stumps.
Fast bowler Vidwath Kaverappa broke the opening partnership by dismissing Desai. Left-arm quick Abhilash then struck in the 33rd and 35th overs to remove Chirag Jani and Jay Gohil respectively. Pacer Vyshak Vijaykumar sent Kotak back to the pavilion, reducing Saurashtra to 128 for four. Experienced batter Arpit Vasavada on 25 and Prerak Mankad on 13 safely navigated the remaining overs, leaving Saurashtra at 164 for four at stumps, still trailing by 178 runs.
Dominant performances across other venues
In Vijayawada, Hyderabad dismissed Andhra for 184 runs, securing a first-innings lead of 91 runs. Hyderabad further strengthened their position by reaching 78 for two in their second innings, extending their overall lead to 169 runs.
In Guwahati, Assam took complete control over Tripura. After posting 334 runs in the first innings, Assam bundled out Tripura for a paltry 62 runs, enforcing the follow-on. Tripura struggled again in their second innings, stumbling to 143 for five. They remain 129 runs behind with five wickets in hand.
Meanwhile, in Mullanpur, Punjab put up a massive first-innings total of 456 runs, propelled by magnificent centuries from Uday Saharan, who scored 161, and Salil Arora, who made 107. Chhattisgarh faltered in response, finishing the second day at 72 for five, giving Punjab a firm grip on the match.
