Salt and Brook's Blitz in Bristol Hands England Their First T20I Series Win Over India in 12 Years

Despite Shreyas Iyer's unbeaten 80, India lost the fourth T20I to England by 9 wickets in Bristol and surrendered the five-match series 3-0. It is India's first bilateral T20I series defeat to England in 12 years.

Shreyas Iyer's captaincy is still searching for its first win. India suffered a crushing nine-wicket defeat to England in the fourth T20 International, and with it the five-match series slipped out of reach as well. England sealed the win at the County Ground in Bristol to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series, meaning India cannot come back to win the series regardless of the result in the remaining game. This is the first time in 12 years that India has lost a bilateral T20I series to England, a run that stretched back well over a decade before this tour.

Salt and Brook's Blitz Overshadows Iyer's Fighting Fifty

Captain Shreyas Iyer shouldered the responsibility in tough conditions, smashing an unbeaten 80 off 49 balls to lift India to 158 for 7. But even that total, which looked competitive on a used Bristol pitch, proved well short against England's explosive batting. Phil Salt and Harry Brook batted with such ferocity in reply that the Indian bowlers looked completely helpless through the chase from start to finish. The pair added an unbroken 146 for the second wicket and wrapped up the chase in just 13.5 overs, never once allowing India back into the contest. This is the first time England has beaten India in a bilateral T20I series of two or more matches, underlining how one-sided this series has been.

Top Order Flops Again, Iyer Steadies the Ship

India's start was disappointing yet again. Young opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi fell for just 15, while Abhishek Sharma made 16 and Ishan Kishan managed only 4 before returning to the pavilion. By the end of the seventh over, the team was struggling at 48 for 3. It was the third straight match in which India's top order collapsed, putting the team under pressure right from the powerplay overs. At that critical juncture, captain Shreyas Iyer took charge of the innings and steadied things when the innings threatened to fall apart completely. He put together a crucial 53-run stand for the fourth wicket with Shivam Dube, who contributed 22 runs to the partnership. Iyer stayed unbeaten till the end and single-handedly guided India to a respectable total that at least gave the bowlers something to defend.

England's Bowlers Keep a Tight Leash

England's bowlers were disciplined throughout the match and rarely allowed India's middle order to break free. Jofra Archer picked up two wickets for just 20 runs in his four overs, while Josh Tongue also claimed two wickets to keep the pressure on. Will Jacks and Adil Rashid took one wicket each, chipping in at crucial moments. Sam Curran did not take a wicket, but he kept India's scoring in check by conceding just 24 runs in his four overs, denying the batters any easy boundaries.

Iyer Turns Aggressive Late, But the Big Total Eludes India

In the closing overs of the innings, Shreyas Iyer turned aggressive to try and push the total higher. In the 18th over, he took Adil Rashid for two successive sixes and a four to collect 20 runs, raising hopes that India could push past the 170 mark. But Sam Curran conceded just four runs in the 19th over to douse that momentum, and in the final over Jofra Archer dismissed Washington Sundar for just 5 and ran out Axar Patel, who could only manage 1 run. In this way, England's bowlers ensured that Iyer's hard-fought innings did not translate into the bigger total India desperately needed.

Milestones Pile Up for Iyer

Iyer's unbeaten 80 came off 49 balls and included four fours and five sixes, arguably his most important knock since taking over the captaincy. During this innings, he crossed the milestone of 50 sixes in T20 International cricket and now has 51 sixes to his name. It was also his 10th T20I half-century, adding another entry to an already impressive white-ball record. Iyer has now scored 1307 runs in 57 T20 Internationals. Against England specifically, he has amassed 339 runs in 10 matches, and this knock was his third half-century against them. It is also the third T20I half-century of his career on foreign soil, a mark of his growing consistency away from home.

Indian Bowling Attack Falls Flat Too

Arshdeep Singh was the lone wicket-taker for India, dismissing Jos Buttler, who was caught behind by wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan for 8 runs. Apart from Arshdeep, every other Indian bowler appeared to surrender in front of England's in-form batters. Washington Sundar leaked runs at an economy of 19, while Shivam Dube conceded 15 runs in his solitary over. Axar Patel was also expensive, giving away 24 runs in two overs. Prasidh Krishna, with 26 runs in three overs, and Prince Yadav, with 28 runs in three overs, bowled comparatively economically, but even they could not stem the flow of boundaries once Salt and Brook found their range.

Suryavanshi's Struggle Continues for a Third Straight Game

Young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi's struggles continued in this match as well. He scored 15 runs and missed out on a big innings for the third consecutive T20I. Before this, he had managed only 14 and 13 runs in his first two matches. Across three matches, he now has 42 runs to his name, at an average of 14 and a strike rate of 168. In these three innings, he has hit one four and five sixes, suggesting the intent is there even though the big score has not yet arrived.

Biggest Worry for India, Decider Set for July 11

The biggest worry for India is that, for the second time in a row, both batting and bowling departments failed completely on the same day. England, on the other hand, delivered strong performances in every department, proving that its dominance in this series is total and not down to any one individual. The two teams will now face off in the fifth and final match of the series on July 11. India will be looking to end the series with at least one win to salvage some pride, even though the series itself has already been sealed by England.
