The state of Punjab is set to witness high-octane cricket action as the official schedule for the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League has been formally announced. Scheduled to run from August 30 through September 13, the premier domestic tournament will feature prominent international and domestic stars including India's Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, dynamic hitter Abhishek Sharma, Prabhsimran Singh, Ramandeep Singh, and Gurnoor Brar.
Tournament Structure and Venue Overview
The formal launch of the tournament took place on Sunday during a special ceremony in Chandigarh. Organizers unveiled the official league logo at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) International Cricket Stadium located in Mullanpur. PCA President Amarjeet Mehta and Secretary Gurmeet Singh presided over the event.
A total of six franchise teams will compete in the championship across 27 matches. The competition will follow a round-robin league format before moving into the final rounds. As per squad composition guidelines, every participating franchise must enlist one marquee player and a minimum of two icon players. Meanwhile, Gill and pacer Gurnoor Brar will remain tied up with national commitments on the ongoing Sri Lanka tour until August 28 before joining their respective league setups.
Shubman Gill Highlights Grassroots Development
Addressing the gathering, Shubman Gill stated that the league provides a crucial launching pad for young cricketers dreaming of representing their state and nation. Encouraging the rising talent, Gill noted, "This will be a great opportunity for all young players."
Gill took a moment to reflect on his humble beginnings in his native village in Fazilka district, Punjab. He acknowledged his father's constant support throughout his developmental years. To help other aspiring youngsters, Gill's family operates a cricket academy in their village that offers completely free training to local children. He shared that his father frequently visits the training ground to observe the kids play, emphasizing that his father's deep-seated passion for the game remains the driving force behind his professional journey.

PCA Secretary Gurmeet Singh emphasized the state's enduring contribution to Indian cricket over the decades. He noted how Punjab has consistently produced world-class talent, ranging from historical icons like Lala Amarnath and World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh to present-day international stars including Gill, Arshdeep, Prabhsimran, and Indian women's team captain Harmanpreet Kaur.
Singh expressed immense confidence that the region possesses an abundance of untapped talent. He firmly believes that the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League will quickly rank among India's leading domestic T20 competitions, offering young athletes a platform to showcase their skills on a grander stage.
