On Monday, batting for the KSCA Secretary's XI against Chhattisgarh in Bengaluru, he brought up a fine century, an innings that read like a direct reply to the selectors who had ignored him twice in a row. The match was played on 7 September in Bengaluru as part of the Dr. K Thimmappaiah Memorial Tournament, a red-ball local tournament that the Karnataka team typically uses to begin its Ranji Trophy preparations each season.
Coach cites 'personal reasons', but Nair's post hints otherwise
Once play ended on day two of the Duleep Trophy final, South Zone coach Vikram Verma faced the media and said that Karun Nair had left the team for personal reasons. However, a post from Nair on X suggested the actual reason was something else altogether, without spelling out further detail. The mismatch between the coach's explanation and the player's own post has fuelled questions that were already swirling around South Zone's player selections through this Duleep Trophy campaign, and the team management's calls are now under fresh scrutiny from followers of the tournament.
Verma defends the combination that cost Nair his spot
Responding to the growing controversy, Verma defended the team's thinking, saying, "We picked a good combination because there are two left-arm spinners in every team." His argument was that having a left-handed batter in the middle order would help the side dominate those spinners through the course of the final. Verma further explained that with Devdutt Padikkal back in the mix for this game, the balance of the side had effectively already been decided, leaving little room for Nair in the final XI despite his experience. He acknowledged that leaving Nair out was not an easy call for the team management to make, but insisted the current combination remained the best option available to South Zone for this particular contest.
