When Shreyas Iyer was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the Indian T20 side, expectations were high that the team would maintain its dominance in this format. The reality on the field, however, turned out to be completely different. The team suffered a 2-0 series loss against Ireland and followed it up with a humiliating 4-0 defeat in the five-match T20 series against England. Such a dismal show from the reigning T20 World Champions caught fans completely off guard. This string of losses has dealt a major blow to India's standing in the ICC T20 team rankings, ending a four-year run at the summit of the table.
England Claims Top Spot in T20 Rankings
Before the two-match T20 series against Ireland under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy, India held a total of 275 rating points. After losing that series 2-0, the team managed to hold onto the top position, but their rating points dropped to 272. While the opening match of the five-game series against England was washed out due to rain, the team went on to lose the next four consecutive matches, causing a rapid decline in their rating points. In the latest ICC update, Team India has dropped to the second position with 268 rating points. Interestingly, the newly crowned number one side, England, also holds 268 points, but they edge out India by a fraction when calculated to the decimal.
The End of a Four-Year Reign
The Indian cricket team first climbed to the top spot in the ICC T20 team rankings in February 2022 and had remained undefeated in that position ever since. During this illustrious period, the team achieved consecutive T20 World Cup victories, winning under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma in 2024 and Suryakumar Yadav in 2026. Now, after four years, the team has surrendered that supremacy. Shreyas Iyer is still searching for his first win as captain, having presided over 7 T20 International matches so far, of which one was abandoned and six resulted in defeat for India.
