Law enforcement authorities in Arunachal Pradesh have launched a major crackdown against an alleged child trafficking ring operating across several districts, successfully rescuing 19 children and apprehending three suspected brokers. The case first came to light when the Child Welfare Committee based in Namsai submitted a formal complaint. Acting on this input, local police registered an official case at the Namsai police station on August 17 to initiate a thorough investigation into the syndicate.
Multi-District Rescue Operations
Because the suspected network operated across a wide geographical area, the children were traced and recovered from multiple locations. These included Mechuka in the Shi-Yomi district, Aalo in West Siang, and Pasighat in East Siang, as well as Naharlagun, Itanagar, and Longding. Given the inter-district complexity of the operation, law enforcement authorities formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the syndicate comprehensively and identify every individual linked to the trafficking ring.
Modus Operandi and Forced Labor
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the perpetrators targeted economically vulnerable families. They allegedly approached parents with false assurances regarding better education, upbringing, and overall care for their children. Once convinced, the minors were separated from their families and placed with individuals in distant areas. Namsai Superintendent of Police Sange Thinley stated that the majority of the rescued minors are under eight years of age, with the youngest being approximately three years old. Investigators have uncovered suspected financial transactions ranging between Rs 10,000 and Rs 50,000 per child involving specific intermediaries and parents. According to the ongoing findings, the rescued minors were deployed as domestic help and forced to work in local hotels.
Ongoing Probe and Public Appeal
As part of the legal proceedings, the statements of all rescued children have been recorded before a magistrate, according to a report. The Special Investigation Team is currently analyzing financial trails, digital evidence, and communication records to unearth the wider network. Superintendent Thinley has also issued a public appeal, urging citizens to come forward with any relevant information regarding children who might be living under similar distressing circumstances as the investigation expands.
