Customs authorities have delivered a massive regulatory blow to an international gold smuggling syndicate, slapping fines exceeding Rs 244 crore on Kannada actress Ranya Rao and three of her key associates. For severe violations of customs regulations, Ranya Rao alone has been penalised to the tune of Rs 89 crore. The punitive action follows a comprehensive 399 page adjudication order issued by Customs Joint Director Sandeep. This major financial penalty comes shortly after the actress was released from Bengaluru Central Jail on April 22, having completed roughly a year under detention.
Hefty Penalties Slapped on Three Co-Accused
The punitive ruling holds all key collaborators within the network financially accountable. According to the adjudication breakdown, co-accused Tarun Konduru Raju faces a fine of Rs 49.51 crore for his involvement in the illicit trade. Furthermore, individual penalties of Rs 53.06 crore each have been imposed on Sahil Jain and Bharat Kumar Jain. Across all four accused individuals, the cumulative penalty reaches over Rs 244 crore, marking one of the steepest monetary enforcement actions recorded in cross-border contraband enforcement.
The Initial Interception at Kempegowda International Airport
The high-profile smuggling operation initially unraveled on March 3, 2025, when enforcement officials intercepted Ranya Rao upon her arrival from Dubai at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. A meticulous examination led to the recovery of 14.213 kilograms of concealed foreign-origin gold, valued at approximately Rs 12.56 crore. While the actress managed to secure bail in the initial customs proceeding, the central government subsequently placed her under preventive detention. The validity of this preventive detention order was later upheld by the Supreme Court in April 2026, keeping her detained until late April.
Search Operations Unearth Substantial Cash and Jewellery
Following her airport interception, investigative agencies expanded their scrutiny to the actress's private residence. A detailed search carried out by the Enforcement Directorate yielded Rs 2.67 crore in unaccounted currency notes along with gold jewellery evaluated at Rs 2.06 crore. Both the liquid cash and the ornamental gold were formally seized as part of the broader probe into assets generated through illegal cross-border movements.
Network Routed Around 113 Kilograms of Bullion
Extended inquiries by the customs department revealed that the syndicate had orchestrated illicit bullion movements far beyond the intercepted luggage. Scrutiny of the syndicate's operational trail showed that Ranya Rao and her accomplices had managed to illegally transport around 113 kilograms of gold from Dubai into India across multiple consignments. Following these findings, penalty show-cause notices were served to Rao and her co-accused in September 2025. During that phase, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence had sought a penalty of Rs 102 crore against Ranya Rao, culminating in the formal Rs 89 crore penalty now ordered by customs adjudicators.
