Guwahati Husband Confesses to Beheading Wife, Head Found Hidden in Refrigerator

A man in Guwahati has confessed to killing his wife and hiding her severed head inside a refrigerator, police said, adding that he suspected her of having an extramarital affair.

A man in Guwahati has confessed to murdering his wife in a gruesome attack, telling police he feels no remorse for what he did. The accused, Ramanuj Goswami, allegedly severed his wife Riya's head, hid it inside a refrigerator, and cut off some of her fingers before he eventually surrendered himself to the investigating officers.

Suspicion and frequent fights in a six-month-old marriage

Goswami and Riya had been married for roughly six months at the time of the killing. DCP (East) Tabu Ram Pegu, the officer in charge of policing the eastern part of Guwahati city, said Goswami suspected his wife of having an extramarital affair. Police said the couple frequently quarrelled over this suspicion, and tensions inside the household had been building for a while. Goswami had also threatened to kill the man he believed was involved with his wife, a threat that police say shows just how deep his suspicion had gone. On the day of the murder, the couple got into another argument that turned violent. Goswami surrendered to police himself after killing Riya Talukdar Goswami.

Neighbours alerted police after losing contact with the family

The case came to light after residents of the Basisthapur area in Guwahati told police they had been unable to reach Riya or her family for some time. DCP (East) Tabu Ram Pegu said that on Tuesday, a team from Hatigaon police station, which covers the same eastern zone, reached the house and found Riya dead, with her head severed from her body. Police and forensic teams combed through the apartment and collected evidence, recovering a sharp weapon called a "dao" that was used to carry out the killing. A dao is a large, heavy-bladed weapon commonly used in the region, similar to a machete. Bloodstains were found inside the flat and household items were scattered, pointing to a violent struggle.

Severed head found in the fridge, fingers cut off

Investigators recovered Riya's severed head from inside a refrigerator, wrapped in a black polythene bag. Some of her fingers had also been cut off. Preliminary forensic examination indicated that the murder had taken place roughly 24 to 48 hours before the body was discovered. The body was subsequently sent to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem. The DCP said that Goswami lost his temper during an argument and killed his wife. Police are now also trying to establish whether Goswami was intoxicated at the time of the murder and whether he has any history of drug addiction.

Claim that he tried to feed body parts to a dog under investigation

Teams from the state Criminal Investigation Department, or CID, which typically handles serious and sensitive cases like this one, along with forensic and fingerprint experts, are examining the evidence to reconstruct exactly how the events unfolded. Police are also verifying reports claiming that Goswami attempted to feed parts of his wife's body to a dog. DCP Tabu Ram Pegu said he was not aware of this specific claim and that it would be confirmed only once the investigation is complete. Goswami, originally from Gauripur, works as a cab driver, while Riya Talukdar Goswami was employed at a boutique in Fancy Bazar. The couple had been living together in Guwahati.
