Mumbai Police have detained two men from the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in the Bandra Kurla Complex area after one of them, who claimed to be an officer of the Prime Minister's Office, was found carrying a fake identity card. His bodyguard, who was with him, was found carrying a gun. Both men have been arrested.
Posed as a PMO officer to enter the venue
The arrested man has been identified as Rohan Parekh. According to police, he tried to enter the venue on September 7 by showing a fake identity card. Mumbai Police personnel noticed him during that attempt and stopped him for questioning. A closer check of his documents revealed that the identity card was not genuine, after which he was taken into custody.
The detention comes a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest 2026 at the Jio World Centre in BKC today, Tuesday, where he will also address the gathering. With this large, high-security event just a day away, the arrest has led police to tighten vigilance across the area even further.
Gun recovered from the bodyguard
Rohan Parekh was accompanied by a bodyguard, and a search of the bodyguard turned up a gun. Police said the main accused who was detained is believed to be around 24 years old. Mumbai Police confirmed that both men were held from the very venue where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to attend the event. After they were caught with a fake document and a weapon, a case was registered against both the accused and his bodyguard at the BKC police station.
Mumbai Crime Branch investigating further
With the case now registered, further investigation has been handed over to the Mumbai Crime Branch. Investigators are trying to establish exactly what the accused intended to achieve by entering the venue with a fake identity card and an armed bodyguard. Police are yet to disclose how Rohan Parekh managed to procure a fake identity card carrying the Prime Minister's Office seal, and tracing its origin is now central to the crime branch's probe.
Security agencies are not treating the attempt to pose as a PMO officer lightly, since it surfaced just ahead of an event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself was to be present. That is why the probe is also digging into the accused's background, his contacts and how the counterfeit document was made.
Given the Prime Minister's presence at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, a tight security cordon had already been placed around the BKC area, and it was this vigilance that led to the fake identity card being caught in time before the venue attempt could go any further.
