A disturbing case of ritualistic murder fueled by deep seated superstition has come to light in the Balangir district of Odisha. In Bagada village, situated under the jurisdiction of the Deogaon police station, a 40 year old man was brutally killed as part of an alleged human sacrifice ritual. The primary accused decapitated the victim, buried his severed head beneath the floor of his domestic prayer room, and dumped the headless torso in a nearby village pond. Following swift investigative action, local police arrested the main perpetrator and successfully exhumed the buried head based on his confession. The deceased has been identified as Santosh Kharsel, a resident of Tebadamunda village located within the Tusura police station limits of Balangir district.
Victim Lured Under Pretext of Meals and Slain in Sleep
Police investigations revealed that the horrific crime was meticulously pre-planned. Providing details of the case, Balangir Superintendent of Police G. Abhilash stated that the main accused, Shatrughna Sahu, invited Santosh Kharsel to his house in Bagada village on August 18 under the guise of offering him a meal. After eating, when Santosh fell asleep inside the house, Shatrughna Sahu along with his accomplices launched a sudden attack. The assailants used a sharp edged weapon to sever Santosh's head from his body while he was unconscious. Following the murder, the accused offered the victim's blood to deities in his house. Police suspect that the entire act was performed as part of a ritualistic human sacrifice.
Severed Head Buried in Worship Room, Torso Cast into Pond
To conceal evidence of the crime, the perpetrators disposed of the victim's remains in two separate locations. They transported the headless torso to the outskirts of Bagada village and threw it into a local pond. Meanwhile, Shatrughna Sahu dug up the earthen floor of the prayer room inside his house and buried the severed head there. The gruesome crime came to light on Thursday when local villagers spotted a headless corpse floating near the edge of the pond. The villagers immediately alerted the authorities, prompting a police team to rush to the spot, secure the body, and initiate an intensive homicide investigation.
Accused Found Meditating as Police Arrive, Confesses After Interrogation
During preliminary inquiries, police gathered critical eyewitness accounts indicating that Santosh Kharsel was last seen in the company of Shatrughna Sahu. Acting on this lead, a police squad raided Sahu's residence. Upon entering the house, officers found Sahu sitting in deep meditation. When initially questioned about Santosh's whereabouts, the accused attempted to mislead investigators by claiming that a violent argument had broken out between them over alcohol consumption, leading to the murder. However, under sustained interrogation, Sahu confessed to the ritual sacrifice and admitted that he had hidden the victim's head inside his prayer room. He led the police team to the exact spot inside his home, where officers excavated the ground and recovered Santosh's severed head.
Five Arrested, Murder Weapon Recovered, Family Members Detained
Law enforcement authorities have taken decisive action by arresting five individuals in connection with the crime, including the prime suspect Shatrughna Sahu. Police officers also recovered and seized the blood stained sharp weapon used to carry out the decapitation. Furthermore, investigators have detained Sahu's mother, brother, and sister-in-law for detailed questioning. Law enforcement officials are investigating whether these family members were aware of the sacrifice plot or assisted in facilitating the murder and hiding the remains.
Wife Living Separately for 10 Years, Sacrifice Performed for Reunion
Police interrogation confirmed that superstition and occult practices were the driving motives behind the fatal sacrifice. During questioning, Shatrughna Sahu allegedly confessed that he performed the human sacrifice ritual to magically force his estranged wife to return home. His wife had separated from him approximately 10 years ago and was living elsewhere with their son and daughter. Reports indicate that Sahu's long standing obsession with tantric rituals and irrational occult activities was the primary reason his family had abandoned him a decade ago, leading him to commit the heinous act in a desperate attempt to reunite with them.
