A severe political dispute has broken out across Bihar after a video showing the alleged mistreatment of a minor girl and an attack on her male companion surfaced from Jamui district. The footage circulated rapidly across social media platforms, leading Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav to launch a sharp critique against the ruling National Democratic Alliance administration and Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. With public anger escalating, law enforcement authorities formed a special investigation team and took three suspects into custody.
Incident in Marwa Village and the Emergence of the Footage
According to information released by the Jamui town police, the incident occurred on the evening of September 19 in Marwa village. The minor girl was traveling along a local road with a male companion when a group of men intercepted them. The assailants allegedly subjected the girl to indecent conduct and physically assaulted the young man with her. Someone present recorded the encounter, and the clip subsequently spread across digital platforms, triggering widespread condemnation and prompting immediate police intervention.
Law enforcement officials registered a formal case under pertinent provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Investigators have arrested three individuals connected to the matter and are examining visual records to identify other individuals seen at the spot. Police officials indicated that proceedings would be directed toward a speedy trial to ensure prompt justice. Simultaneously, cyber units are collaborating with digital platforms to scrub the sensitive footage involving the minor and prevent its further spread.
Opposition Mounts Fierce Attack on Administration
Reacting strongly to the incident, Tejashwi Yadav held the state government accountable for what he described as a breakdown in administrative control. He stated, ‘It is a very tragic incident. We are ashamed.’ He pointed out that claims previously made regarding unrestricted freedom for women to move around safely even late at night stood contradicted by such occurrences. According to him, young women across educational institutions, hostels, and residential areas in the state are increasingly worried about their personal security.
Taking his criticism further, Yadav wrote on X that administrative representatives were delivering irresponsible statements on the episode. He argued that top political figures were occupied with community conventions while the crime was taking place in Jamui. He further alleged that instead of delivering prompt justice to victims, administrative efforts often tilt toward minimizing such controversies. Pointing to broader concerns surrounding crime and unlawful activities, he asserted that accountability at the top leadership level has deteriorated.
Special Investigation Team Assigned to Probe
To ensure a swift and systematic investigation, the state police headquarters directed the formation of a special investigation team headed by woman Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deepti Monali. The team has been tasked with gathering physical evidence, recording witness statements, and securing forensic material to build a solid prosecution case. A primary priority of the team is to locate and apprehend every individual involved in intercepting and assaulting the victims.
The administrative development comes at a time of leadership transition within the state police. Bihar Director General of Police Vinay Kumar commenced a 21-day leave running from September 15 through October 5. In his absence, senior 1991-batch Indian Police Service officer Preeta Verma, who serves as Director General of Home Guards, was given additional charge as Acting Director General of Police. Handling this sensitive case and maintaining public confidence in the administrative apparatus represent immediate operational priorities for her office.
National Commission for Women Demands Seven-Day Report
The ramifications of the Jamui incident have reached beyond Bihar, drawing attention from central regulatory bodies in New Delhi. Taking formal cognizance of the episode, the National Commission for Women requested a comprehensive report from the Bihar Director General of Police. The commission instructed state authorities to provide comprehensive protection, counseling, and legal assistance to the victims, while taking decisive steps to purge the unauthorized recordings from digital networks. The panel directed the state police to furnish its action-taken report within seven days.
Investigators now face three central objectives in handling the case. First, completing the identification and arrest of all participants present at the scene. Second, conducting an unbiased and rigorous probe supported by digital and circumstantial evidence. Third, executing effective takedowns of the offensive material to protect the minor victim's identity and privacy.
