The Supreme Court has taken a stern stand on the continuous rise of sexual crimes against women and minors in the national capital and surrounding areas. Taking suo motu cognizance of brutal incidents including a gangrape in a public park and a horrific assault on a minor inside a moving sleeper bus, the apex court expressed profound anguish over the deteriorating safety situation.
Bench draws parallels with the 2012 Nirbhaya case
During the proceedings, the bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice K Vinod Chandran noted that these recurring incidents bring back painful memories of the 2012 Nirbhaya tragedy. The court highlighted that such grave offenses reflect severe lapses in the security apparatus and demand immediate institutional correction to protect vulnerable citizens across the metropolitan region.
Court emphasizes administrative and police accountability
The judiciary made it clear that compromising the safety of women in the capital is entirely unacceptable and fixing accountability for local administration and police forces has become critical. Expressing deep concern over systemic failures, the bench directed the registration of a public interest litigation to examine the worsening law enforcement situation in depth.
