Stablecoin operator Tether generated $1.5 billion in net operating profit during the third quarter of 2026, matching its performance from the preceding quarter. The result brings the firm's total net operating profit for the first nine months of the year to $4.5 billion, with income predominantly driven by returns on US Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements.
Reserve Buffer Expansion and Treasury Holdings
The company experienced substantial growth in its reserve buffer, which measures the surplus of its assets against its total liabilities. By the end of September, this financial cushion nearly doubled to $7.95 billion, up significantly from the $4.1 billion recorded at the end of June. Total reserve assets expanded to $191.5 billion against obligations of $183.5 billion.
Tether also disclosed that its direct and indirect exposures to US Treasury bills amounted to $132.4 billion. Despite sustained turbulence across the wider digital asset marketplace, USDT issuance held steady at approximately $184 billion across the initial three quarters of 2026.
Liquidity Management and Leadership Perspective
Evaluating the quarterly figures, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that the combination of $1.5 billion in operational earnings and nearly $8 billion in excess reserves establishes a resilient operational base. He indicated that the asset allocation model is structured specifically to preserve liquidity during stress events and manage client redemption activity without disrupting core operations.
Ardoino emphasized that the structural intent of the reserve setup is to guarantee continued service delivery when broader economic or market pressures intensify, ensuring that liquidity demands can be absorbed under challenging conditions.
Coinbase Recovers Profitability Driven by Investment Gains
In parallel digital asset developments, exchange operator Coinbase moved back into positive earnings territory following three consecutive loss-making quarters, generating $718.7 million in third-quarter net income. The positive print was heavily driven by approximately $715 million in gains from crypto assets held on its balance sheet for investment purposes.
When excluding those investment fluctuations and their corresponding tax considerations, Coinbase delivered an adjusted net income of $77.7 million. A sustained slowdown in user trading activity pushed transaction revenue down 43 percent year-on-year to $590 million. However, adjusted EBITDA advanced 60 percent from the second quarter to $333 million, extending the platform's run of positive adjusted EBITDA to 15 quarters in succession.
USDC Holdings and Ecosystem Expansion
Coinbase also highlighted sustained traction within its stablecoin segment. The average volume of USDC managed across its consumer and institutional products reached an unprecedented peak of $22 billion in the third quarter.
This achievement marks a 49 percent year-on-year increase and represented roughly 30 percent of the total average market capitalization of USDC throughout the quarter. Over the preceding twelve months, Coinbase captured 50 percent of the total economics generated by USDC, supported by deeper integration across platform offerings and expanded on-chain collaboration.
