Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is preparing to reactivate its third runway, designated 11R/29L, starting September 20, 2026, following the completion of an extensive rehabilitation initiative. The comprehensive project marks the runway's first major overhaul after nearly 17 years of sustained operational service. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) confirmed that all engineering work has been concluded and necessary clearances across aviation regulators have been formally secured to resume flight movements.
Extensive Airside Upgrades Underway Since February
Rehabilitation work on the strip commenced in February 2026, encompassing far more than routine asphalt patching and surface re-profiling. The infrastructure program was engineered to modernize critical airside systems, directly targeting gains in operational safety, movement capacity, and overall airfield efficiency. Along with full resurfacing, engineers strengthened the underlying pavement structure to withstand heavy aircraft loads over extended operating cycles. The overhaul also executed permanent threshold displacement works on runway 29L to align with updated operational parameters.
Addition of Rapid Exit Taxiway and Lighting Enhancements
To expedite ground flows, project teams installed a newly engineered Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET Z1). This critical addition allows arriving flights to vacate the active surface at elevated rollout speeds, dramatically trimming runway occupancy times and smoothing air traffic flow. The airfield's electrical and civil frameworks were also overhauled alongside an extensive modernization of the airfield ground lighting setup. These system-level refinements are designed to maintain dependable landing and departure rhythms across varied seasonal and meteorological conditions.
Regulatory Validation and Operational Significance
Prior to greenlighting the runway for commercial schedules, multi-agency inspections, system calibrations, and validation processes were carried out involving the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Authority of India (AAI), Air Traffic Control (ATC), scheduled airlines, and related operational bodies. DIAL Chief Executive Officer Pradeep Panicker highlighted that reactivating the upgraded third runway represents a vital milestone for the capital's aviation gateway. He emphasized that combining the revamped surface with the new rapid exit taxiway, reinforced navigation aids, and modern lighting systems elevates both airport handling throughput and operational resilience. Originally commissioned in 2008, runway 11R/29L logged approximately seventeen straight years of demanding traffic, with only an interim, limited scope of maintenance carried out in 2017.
