Concerns over public safety in the national capital have resurfaced following two horrifying incidents of sexual violence reported from different parts of Delhi. In one case, a six-year-old child was subjected to sexual assault in the Karol Bagh area, while in another episode, a young woman was gang-raped inside a well-known public park near Kalkaji. Law enforcement agencies have initiated swift legal proceedings and launched operations to bring all culprits to book.
Six-Year-Old Child Assaulted In Karol Bagh Area
The first horrifying incident took place within the territorial jurisdiction of Desh Bandhu Gupta Road police station in Karol Bagh. A six-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a man known to her family. The crime came to light rapidly, prompting swift intervention by vigilant neighbours who caught the suspect and handed him over to law enforcement authorities. The suspect was taken into police custody and subjected to detailed interrogation.
According to police officials, local residents arrived at the Shidipura police post around 6:30 pm on Monday, accompanied by the victim child, her family members, and the apprehended accused. Police identified the 34-year-old accused as Ankit, a resident of Kishanganj in Delhi. Officials noted that Ankit was well acquainted with the survivor's family. The victim's father stated that he received a phone call regarding the assault at around 7:00 pm, and by the time he reached home, neighbours had already overpowered the suspect and transferred him to custody.
Local residents caught the accused in the Kishanganj area while he was committing the sexual abuse, subsequently marching him straight to the local police post. Following the distressing incident, an agitated crowd staged a demonstration outside the police post demanding severe punishment. Police promptly arranged a medical examination for the young girl and registered a formal case under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act alongside various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, or BNS. This comes in the wake of an earlier incident in Sadar Bazar, where an 11-year-old girl was confined inside a shop and sexually assaulted.
Woman Gang-Raped Near Kalkaji Temple In Public Park
The second heinous crime unfolded in south Delhi near Kalkaji Temple and ISKCON Temple. According to the police complaint, the young woman had visited Kalkaji Temple with a male friend to offer prayers. After finishing their visit, the duo walked into the nearby Aastha Kunj Park at approximately 7:30 pm.
While they were inside the park, three unidentified men aged between 25 and 30 approached them. The three men falsely claimed to be police officers and threatened the woman and her companion. One of the assailants forcefully restrained the woman's male friend, after which all three individuals assaulted the woman in turns inside the park grounds.
Police Arrest One Accused After Encounter, Hunt On For Accomplices
Following the report of the gang-rape near Kalkaji Temple, Delhi Police launched an immediate crackdown. On Tuesday, police achieved a major breakthrough by apprehending one of the suspects following an armed encounter. The arrested suspect has been identified as a man named Asif. Delhi Police are carrying out further interrogation and investigative procedures. Meanwhile, multiple police teams have been deployed to trace and arrest the remaining two suspects who fled the scene.
