Ghazipur is widely recognized as a land of sages and spiritual heritage, where libraries have played a vital role in carrying forward traditions of knowledge and literature. Located near the Kapoorpur City Inter College, the district library stands as a prime example of this intellectual culture. With a history spanning nearly four decades, this establishment houses approximately 14,000 books. A notable feature of the facility is that readers can study for free and secure a lifetime membership by depositing a refundable security amount of 500 rupees.
History and Operations Explained by Ajay Singh
According to Ajay Singh, who is associated with the library, the institution was established around 1987 and was restructured in a modern format in 1995. At present, about 400 active readers are connected with the facility. The shelves feature a diverse collection ranging from novels and literature to competitive exam guides, academic syllabi, research publications, and legal texts. In addition to books, 25 monthly magazines and seven daily newspapers are made available for visitors.
Renovation and Upcoming Digital Upgrades
The district library underwent a comprehensive renovation roughly three years ago, following which major emphasis was placed on upgrading reader facilities. The premises now offer high-speed Wi-Fi, broadband internet, clean drinking water, and RO water purifiers. Separate restrooms have been constructed for male and female visitors. The reading rooms remain open from 10 am to 5 pm daily. Work is currently underway to digitize the entire book catalog. Ajay Singh noted that future plans involve transforming the venue into a full-fledged digital library to make study materials even more accessible to the public.
A Supportive Hub for Competitive Exam Aspirants
The quiet atmosphere and availability of reference materials serve as major advantages for students visiting the library. Shubam, a student from the Cheetnath Ghat area who is preparing for competitive tests, stated that books related to the SSC and other exams are readily accessible, aiding his preparation. Pragya, who has been visiting for about a year to prepare for the CSIR NET-JRF exam, highlighted the affordable membership and peaceful environment as the best aspects of the place. She mentioned that watching fellow students study provides strong personal motivation, while amenities like water coolers prove very useful. Anil Yadav, an aspirant preparing for army recruitment, explained that internet access helps him with online studies, and he spends about five to six hours studying daily after arriving at 10 am.
A Welcoming Space for Senior Citizens and Newspaper Readers
The library caters to demographics beyond students, serving older citizens as well. Santosh, a senior reader around 60 years of age, visits regularly to read newspapers whenever he finds time. He noted that multiple Hindi newspapers, including Amar Ujala and Dainik Jagran, are available on the premises. According to him, the serene environment and cooperative staff make the location special. Over a journey spanning nearly four years, this library has remained an invaluable resource for learners, job seekers, researchers, and newspaper readers alike.
