The film Satluj, starring Diljit Dosanjh, has become the focal point of intense controversy. The movie depicts the life and work of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, a narrative that has sparked significant debate. While the film was released on the OTT platform ZEE5 without much fanfare, it was abruptly removed within 48 hours of its debut. In response to this removal, the District Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (DGPC) in Jammu has emerged as a vocal opponent. Sardar Jagpal Singh, the treasurer of the DGPC, has asserted that despite the film being pulled from the streaming service, they are committed to ensuring the public has the opportunity to view it. He has officially announced that the film will be screened for the 'sangat' (community) by setting up viewing arrangements in various Gurudwaras across Jammu.
Detailed Screening Schedule
The committee has formulated a structured plan to facilitate the film's public viewing. In the initial phase, the movie is being screened at four prominent Gurudwaras in Jammu. The inaugural screening took place on Friday at the Gurudwara in Guru Nanak Nagar. Following this, the film was shown on Saturday at Gurudwara Sahib in Akhnoor and on Sunday in Khor Bryce Pura. Furthermore, the public will have the opportunity to watch the film on July 14th at the Gurudwara Sadan in Talab Tillo. Sardar Jagpal Singh indicated that as they receive cooperation from additional committees, they plan to expand these screenings to other Gurudwaras across the Jammu region on a larger scale.
Criticism Regarding Suppression of Truth
Sardar Jagpal Singh expressed deep frustration regarding the rapid removal of the film from the OTT platform. He characterized the action as a significant stain on democracy, maintaining that the contents of the film represent undeniable historical realities. He directed criticism toward the individuals and systemic pressures responsible for the film's withdrawal. According to Singh, the nation functions like a beautiful bouquet, which inherently requires the freedom of expression and the liberty to hold diverse viewpoints. He stated that engaging in politics to suppress the truth is an act of deep shame.
Raising Questions on Justice
During the discourse on this controversy, Sardar Jagpal Singh raised pointed questions regarding the film's validity. He asked why the CBI failed to conduct an investigation if the claims made in the film were purportedly false. He also queried why no one was penalized when the matter reached the court. While acknowledging that the identity of those behind the film's removal remains unclear, he emphasized that obstructing the truth from reaching the public is, in itself, a grave moral failing. Even after being removed from the streaming platform, the buzz surrounding Satluj continues to grow, with significant interest from both the Sikh community and the general public regarding the upcoming screenings in local Gurudwaras.
