Streaming tracking service JustWatch has compiled the ten most-watched TV series of the month, and the list ranges from freshly launched originals to shows already several seasons deep.
Widow's Bay tops the list with scares and laughs
An Apple TV+ series called Widow's Bay has picked up near-unanimous praise from both critics and viewers for pulling off a genuinely tricky combination: real scares paired with real laughs. The show is set on the island town of Widow's Bay, where sea hags, fog monsters and the ghosts of serial killers lurk around every corner. Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, is undeterred by any of it. Nicolas Cage becomes a noir superhero in Spider-Noir
Spider-Noir reimagines a Spider-Man style hero inside the stylized, black-and-white world of classic film noir, with Nicolas Cage in the lead role. The series is set in an alternate-universe New York of the 1930s. Cage plays Ben Reilly, a weary private detective who once secretly operated as a masked vigilante known as The Spider, cleaning up the city's streets. After a personal tragedy, Reilly quit and buried himself in cheap whiskey instead. When a new case turns up a sprawling political conspiracy, he is forced to put the mask back on and confront everything he left behind. FROM returns for a fourth season of unrelenting dread
The unnamed town at the center of FROM keeps finding new ways to torment its residents, whether that's worms burrowing under people's skin or the mysterious Man in Yellow stealing souls. The show's fourth season, from executive producers behind Lost, pushes the surviving characters to their breaking point as the barrier separating their strange town from the ordinary world grows thinner. Cape Fear gets a ten-episode revenge thriller reboot
Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese serve as executive producers on this expanded, ten-episode retelling of Cape Fear, a story that has already inspired two well-regarded films. In this version, Amy Adams plays defense attorney Anna Bowden, who represented murder suspect Max Cady seventeen years earlier and lost the case. It later emerges that Cady was innocent, and he has spent nearly two decades plotting revenge against the woman he blames for his imprisonment. Javier Bardem takes on the role of Cady, a part previously played by Robert Mitchum, Robert De Niro and, in a lighter pop-culture reference, Sideshow Bob. The Boroughs sends retirees up against a supernatural threat
The Boroughs is a fictional take on the sprawling Florida retirement communities modeled on places like The Villages. Alfred Molina plays Sam, a recently widowed man who arrives in the community unimpressed by what he finds. The retirees who live there mostly spend their days socializing or waiting for grandchildren to visit, until a supernatural threat disrupts their routine. Sam ends up rallying a group of grandmothers and older men to take on the evil forces, treating it with the same energy as grabbing an early bird special. Executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, the show plays like Stranger Things but with senior citizens. It has already been cancelled, though the first season wraps up on a fairly satisfying note. I Will Find You follows a father's prison break
Like Max Cady in Cape Fear, the central character of I Will Find You was imprisoned for a murder he didn't commit, though his goals are very different. David Burroughs, played by Sam Worthington, was convicted of killing his own son. When he discovers evidence suggesting the boy is actually alive, he breaks out of prison to track him down. Styled as a modern spin on The Fugitive, the series follows Burroughs as he stays one step ahead of the authorities while untangling a twisting conspiracy to clear his name and reunite with his child. Off Campus brings a bestselling hockey romance to the screen
Ice hockey players are having something of a moment on television, following the success of Heated Rivalry, and Off Campus continues the trend. Rick and Morty keeps its portal gun running in season nine
Rick and Morty is now nine seasons in, and by this point audiences already know whether they're on board with its chaotic, multiverse-spanning brand of humor. The animated series follows a sociopathic scientist and his perpetually anxious grandson as they battle cosmic threats and stumble through dysfunctional family drama across the multiverse. It remains defiantly strange, cynical and loud, and the newest season shows there's still plenty of life left in the show's central gimmick. It streams on both Hulu and Max.
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed twists a '90s erotic thriller into something new
Tatiana Maslany stars as Paula, a divorced single mother caught up in a custody battle, in Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. Her secret is an online relationship with a camboy named Trevor, played by Brandon Flynn. Things spiral when someone attacks Trevor on camera and Paula starts receiving ransom notes. The show plays with whether Paula actually witnessed a crime, whether her online companion is running a scam on her, or whether something even more sinister is happening. Fans who miss the twist-heavy energy of 1990s erotic thrillers, filtered through a more cynical, modern-paranoia lens, are the target audience here. It streams on Apple TV+.
The Four Seasons rounds out the list with a starry ensemble comedy
Anyone craving a strong ensemble comedy should look at The Four Seasons, co-created by and starring Tina Fey.
