Box office hit 'Jana Nayakan', starring superstar Thalapathy Vijay, is facing severe disruption across Karnataka following widespread protests. Local farmers and pro-Kannada organizations have staged demonstrations against the release of river water to Tamil Nadu. Fearing escalation and potential disruption, several theater owners across the state have taken down posters and halted screenings of the Tamil action drama.
Screenings Halted and Posters Removed Over Security Concerns
Escalating protests across Karnataka raised significant concerns regarding law and order, prompting theater management in multiple locations to preemptively suspend shows of 'Jana Nayakan'. Cinema owners swiftly dismantled large cut-outs, banners, and promotional posters featuring Vijay from their premises to avoid targeted vandalism.
In Bengaluru, the well-known Urvashi Theatre stopped screenings of the movie following explicit advice from local police authorities. Theater staff removed all promotional materials and replaced the scheduled shows of 'Jana Nayakan' with the Kannada film 'Karavali'. To prevent any untoward incidents, police personnel were deployed outside the theater venue. Similar anti-screening demonstrations were reported in Mandya, where pro-Kannada activists pulled down banners of the movie as part of their ongoing Cauvery water agitation.
Disruption Set to Hit Karnataka Box Office Collections
The film had made a grand theatrical entry on 23 July across Karnataka, releasing in approximately 125 to 150 theaters. This included over 75 single-screen cinemas and nearly 50 multiplex screens across the state. Following its release, the film was witnessing strong audience turnout and impressive box office numbers.
However, the sudden suspension of shows in major centers across Karnataka is expected to severely impact its financial performance. With screenings halted during key viewing windows, distributors and theater operators are facing notable revenue losses, halting the movie's momentum in the state market.
Star Cast and Adaptation of 'Bhagavanth Kesari'
Directed by H. Vinoth, 'Jana Nayakan' is a high-octane Tamil political action drama. The film features Thalapathy Vijay in the lead role alongside Bollywood actor Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, and Mamitha Baiju in key roles. The ensemble cast also includes prominent actors such as Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Narain, and Priyamani in pivotal supporting characters.
The project serves as the official Tamil remake of the 2023 Telugu blockbuster 'Bhagavanth Kesari'. The narrative centers around a former IPS officer who assumes responsibility for his deceased friend's daughter. He works to help her overcome deep-seated childhood trauma while encouraging her to pursue a career in the armed forces.
