Addressing recurring skepticism about why another film based on the revered Indian epic needs to be made, producer Namit Malhotra has articulated his creative vision. He explained that his primary objective is to present the timeless saga with an unprecedented level of visual grandeur that audiences have never experienced before. Through this production, the intention is to elevate the ancient narrative to the cinematic magnitude seen in landmark global franchise features.
Global Production Standards for an Ancient Epic
This ambitious cinematic journey is being structured as a two-part saga. Speculation in the industry places the combined production cost in the range of 4,000 crore rupees, though Malhotra has never officially verified that figure. The initial chapter of the anticipated cinematic event is slated for theatrical release on a Thursday, arriving exactly three days before the Diwali festival on Sunday.
The production aims to leverage cutting-edge 3D and IMAX technologies to craft an immersive theatrical experience. In terms of both creative ambition and expenditure, the effort is designed to match monumental fantasy epics like 'The Lord of the Rings', ensuring that the narrative of Lord Ram unfolds on the grandest possible cinematic canvas.
Justifying a Fresh Take on a Familiar Narrative
Reflecting on common queries regarding why another version is necessary when the narrative is already universally recognized across households, Malhotra pointed out that familiarity should not preclude breathtaking technical execution. The driving motivation remains showing audiences a perspective and visual execution they have never witnessed on screen.
"You would not have seen Ramayana at this scale and grandeur in any TV show, street play, or Ramlila… think of films like Avatar, Avengers, Spider-Man, or The Odyssey… we are bringing it to that benchmark."
While acknowledging traditional representations such as television serials, street plays, and local Ramlila performances, Malhotra emphasized that modern filmmaking tools allow the story to compete with world-class spectacles like 'Avatar', 'Avengers', 'Spider-Man', and 'The Odyssey'.
Creative Partnerships and Ensemble Cast
Malhotra's earlier production credits include director Ayan Mukerji's fantasy feature 'Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva' as well as international projects like 'The Garfield Movie'. For this retelling of Valmiki's epic, he is driving the effort through Prime Focus Studios. The monumental project brings together technical collaboration from Academy Award-winning visual effects studio DNEG alongside actor Yash's banner Monster Mind Creations.
Helmed by director Nitesh Tiwari, the production features an expansive star lineup. Ranbir Kapoor leads the cast portraying Lord Ram, paired with Sai Pallavi in the role of Sita. Yash takes on the formidable role of Ravana, while Ravi Dubey depicts Lakshman. Through this magnum opus, Malhotra aims to demonstrate on the world stage that Indian cinema is fully equipped to deliver visual masterworks matching the highest international benchmarks.
