The enduring bond between Indian cinema titans Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth spans more than four decades. As excitement builds around upcoming cinematic ventures like Jailer 2, a memorable public reflection from Rajinikanth concerning Bachchan's historic financial turnaround has resurfaced. The veteran actor had offered an intimate look into the period when Bachchan faced severe economic hardship and demonstrated unparalleled resilience to rebuild his standing.
The Venture That Led to Financial Strain
Rajinikanth recounted that Bachchan chose to step away into corporate entrepreneurship while enjoying the absolute pinnacle of his acting stardom. He launched an ambitious entertainment venture, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited. The business faced unanticipated hurdles, eventually stumbling into severe operational losses that brought the legendary star close to insolvency. The resulting financial burden stood at roughly 90 crore rupees.
To settle the escalating obligations, Bachchan had to liquidate prime assets, including his residence in Juhu and several other properties spread across Mumbai. Rather than retreating from public life, the veteran performer chose to confront the catastrophe through relentless industry and sheer grit, accepting work wherever it was offered.
A Three-Year Battle Against Debt at Age 64
According to Rajinikanth, sections of the Mumbai film industry observed the downfall with skepticism. Despite facing numerous bodily ailments and being 64 years of age at the time, Bachchan maintained a punishing schedule of working 18 hours each day across a three-year span. This sustained effort allowed him to clear every rupee of the outstanding 90 crore rupees liability.
‘That is what Amitabh Bachchan is!’
Highlighting the magnitude of his friend's resurgence, Rajinikanth noted that Bachchan did not simply clear his debts and buy back his lost residence; he eventually purchased three properties along that very same lane, sealing a comeback rarely witnessed in show business.
Four Decades of Shared Screen History
The cinematic collaboration between the two luminaries began in the early 1980s. Rajinikanth marked his Hindi film debut alongside Bachchan in the 1983 hit Andhaa Kanoon, which went on to emerge as the fifth highest-earning film of that calendar year. They joined forces again in 1985 for Geraftaar, in which Rajinikanth contributed a key cameo, followed by their celebrated union in the 1991 drama Hum.
After a gap spanning 33 years, director TJ Gnanavel brought the pair back together in the project Vettaiyan. Reflecting on this reunion, Rajinikanth shared a picture with Bachchan on social media, describing him as a mentor and expressing deep joy at collaborating with the cinematic icon once again under the Lyca banner.
Continuing an Active Career
Bachchan continues to anchor major entertainment projects with untiring consistency. He was recently featured in the ensemble spectacle Kalki 2898 AD alongside Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan. Alongside his film commitments, he remains a staple on Indian television screens as the host of the quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati.
