Legal scrutiny continues to intensify in the high-profile Renukaswamy murder case involving prominent figures from the Kannada film industry. Renukaswamy, a resident of Chitradurga in Karnataka, was abducted and brutally assaulted in June 2024. According to police reports, investigators subsequently discovered his body dumped inside a drainage canal in the Kamakshipalya area of Bengaluru. The revelation launched an extensive criminal investigation that led directly to the arrest of Kannada actor Darshan and actress Pavithra Gowda. Both key accused currently remain incarcerated in judicial custody as multiple court proceedings progress.
Allegations of Kidnapping and Severe Violence
Investigative findings indicate that the conflict originated over allegations that Renukaswamy was sending explicit and derogatory messages to actress Pavithra Gowda on social media platforms. Infuriated by these online interactions, a premeditated plot was allegedly executed to target the victim. Police officials assert that actor Darshan conspired with several associates to orchestrate Renukaswamy's kidnapping from Chitradurga. The victim was transported to a secluded private location where he was subjected to prolonged physical abuse. After his death, his body was discarded in a Bengaluru canal. Confessions from co-suspects identified Darshan as a central conspirator, leading to his arrest and repeated rejection of his bail applications.
Courtroom Defense Claims vs Family Demands for Justice
During prior judicial proceedings, defense counsel representing actor Darshan sought to challenge the victim's character in court, describing Renukaswamy as disrespectful toward women and a threat to the moral fabric of society. However, Renukaswamy's wife strongly repudiated these allegations. Recalling her final phone conversation with her husband on the afternoon of June 8, she questioned the extreme violence used against him. She maintained that even if any improper social media communication had occurred, a formal warning should have been issued rather than taking his life. She reiterated her firm demand for justice, emphasizing that stardom should not grant immunity from the law.
Comprehensive Charge Sheet and Supreme Court Bail Cancellation
Following a detailed probe, Bengaluru Police submitted a massive 3,991-page charge sheet before the court. The document explicitly names Pavithra Gowda, actor Darshan, and 15 other individuals as accused parties in the crime. Gowda was taken into custody by Bengaluru police in August 2025 and has remained in jail since then. Meanwhile, actor Darshan had initially secured regular bail from the Karnataka High Court in December 2024. However, that legal relief was overturned in 2025 when the Supreme Court of India upheld an appeal by the state government, revoking Darshan's bail and remanding him back into custody.
High Court Reprimand Over Jail Video Conference Protocol
The case witnessed further controversy during virtual proceedings before the Karnataka High Court. On August 13, Pavithra Gowda appeared via video conferencing from prison but faced immediate questioning after arriving late and allegedly wearing headphones inside the jail premises. Although Gowda denied utilizing headphones during the session, the presiding judge rejected her argument. Expressing serious concern over potential security and procedural breaches within the correctional facility, the High Court directed prison authorities to submit a detailed written explanation regarding the incident.
