Popular playback singer Sonu Nigam has addressed the widespread criticism he faced online after deflecting questions about the ongoing NEET medical entrance examination protests during a public appearance. The singer clarified why he chose not to comment on the student agitation during that specific event, citing event decorum, a personal commitment to his family, and his past record of speaking out on major social and industry issues.
Viral Event Incident and Online Backlash
The controversy originated during a media interaction in Mumbai, where journalists questioned Sonu Nigam regarding his views on the nationwide student demonstrations surrounding the NEET examination. Visibly annoyed by the off-topic query, the vocalist declined to engage, stating, "Now that's enough," before ending the interaction. A short video clip of the exchange rapidly circulated across major social media platforms.
Following the video's emergence, a section of online users criticized the singer for remaining silent on an issue deeply affecting thousands of students. Critics pointed out that while several other prominent artists and public figures had publicly voiced support for the protesting candidates, a widely followed figure had refrained from using his platform to address the matter.
Event Decorum and Respect for the Occasion
Addressing the criticism, Sonu Nigam emphasized the importance of adhering to professional decorum during public gatherings. He explained that the event where the question was posed had been organized specifically as a tribute to the late ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas. According to Nigam, shifting the focus to political debates or unrelated controversies during a solemn memorial service would have been entirely disrespectful to the memory of the legendary artist.
Reflecting on his career spanning nearly three decades in Mumbai, the veteran artist noted that extensive experience with press conferences taught him an essential boundary. He stated that conversations during any organized media interaction should remain strictly confined to the primary theme for which the gathering was convened.
Personal Principles and History of Raising Issues
Sonu Nigam also revealed a personal rule guiding his public statements, sharing that he promised his father never to comment publicly on matters where he lacks comprehensive information. Since he did not possess complete details regarding the technicalities of the examination controversy, he felt it was responsible to refrain from offering an opinion.
Pushing back against accusations of indifference, Nigam asserted that he has never been a silent spectator throughout his life. Although he maintains no social media apps on his smartphone, he reminded critics that he has repeatedly taken strong public stands on contentious matters. He cited his previous public objections to the use of loudspeakers at religious venues and his sustained advocacy for artists' fair royalty rights as clear evidence of his willingness to challenge systemic practices.
Nigam remarked that he has fought standalone battles in the past to drive structural reforms across the industry. Encouraging others to step up, he expressed that it is now time for other individuals to show courage, speak out, and see what positive changes they can bring about.
