Bollywood actor Sunny Deol has spoken candidly about the turbulent phases of his career and the financial hurdles he faced despite delivering massive box office hits. There was a time when the acclaimed star struggled to find suitable film projects and directors even after giving consecutive blockbusters. He recently reflected on that testing period in the early 2000s when mounting debts and industry shifts threatened his career before he made a triumphant return to the big screen with Gadar 2.
Financial Strains from Directing and Producing
During a podcast interview, the actor discussed the heavy financial losses he suffered after stepping into film direction and production. He recalled the year 2001 when his film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha hit the theatres and clashed directly at the box office with Aamir Khan's Lagaan, yet went on to amass a massive domestic collection of around 77 crore rupees. He noted that he also released Indian around the same time, which generated business significantly higher than Lagaan and several other contemporary releases.
Shifting Corporate Culture in the Film Industry
Detailing the changing dynamics of the entertainment sector, the actor expressed confusion over why he struggled to secure the right scripts and filmmakers despite delivering monumental hits, attributing the shift to the sudden arrival of corporate culture which altered the entire working format of the industry. He also touched upon the major controversy surrounding his 2005 action comedy film Jo Bole So Nihal, directed by Rahul Rehwali, which faced stiff opposition from a section of the Sikh community.
Controversies and the Role of Politics
Reflecting on the outcome of that project, the actor stated that the film fell victim to politics and could not progress, eventually forcing them to pull it out of theatres due to mounting protests. He emphasized that cinema should not be subjected to political interference because they are merely artists dedicated to entertaining audiences rather than engaging in controversies.
Debt Settlement and the Juhu Bungalow Notice
Amid financial distress stemming from box office failures and production ventures, the actor maintained that money never dictated his life choices. Following the massive success of Gadar 2 in 2023, a bank had issued an e-auction notice for his Juhu property, Sunny Villa, over unpaid dues and interest amounting to approximately 55.99 crore rupees. The notice was subsequently withdrawn after agreement on payment terms. Clarifying the situation, he stated that the funds he needed to clear were entirely his own responsibility without any external borrowing, noting that he remained genuinely happy and content with life even while dealing with that substantial debt.
