Political duties often demand complete public focus, yet personal milestones find their own way into the spotlight. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay surprised spectators during a public engagement on Friday in Madhurantakam by spontaneously acknowledging his son's creative debut. Jason Sanjay stepped into the entertainment industry as a director with the release of the film Sigma, and his father ended up offering an unexpected public tribute right from his rally vehicle.
An Unscripted Gesture on the Madhurantakam Roadshow Route
Chief Minister Vijay was in the Madhurantakam region to launch a free bus travel welfare initiative aimed at women commuters, alongside addressing a massive public gathering. As his motorcade moved through the streets while he greeted supporters, an energetic party worker in the gathering stretched forward with a framed picture. The frame displayed Jason Sanjay's portrait superimposed on the promotional poster of Sigma.
Rather than ignoring the offering, the leader reached out and took hold of the frame without delay. He lifted the picture high above his head and rotated to show it across all directions to the gathered crowd. Within minutes of this unscripted moment, recorded video clips of the gesture circulated rapidly across social media platforms, with viewers discussing the father's affectionate salute to his son's creative venture.
Family Attends Opening-Day Screening at Chennai's Kamala Cinemas
While the Chief Minister tended to administrative announcements and political gatherings outside the city, the rest of the household celebrated the release inside Chennai. Jason Sanjay arrived at Kamala Cinemas to catch the opening-day first show accompanied by his mother Sangeetha Sornalingam and sister Divya Sasha. Divya offered visual encouragement by sporting a customized black T-shirt bearing the title Sigma as they watched the audience reaction unfold firsthand.
Director on Deliberate Distance from Campaign Spotlight
Prior to the theatrical launch, Jason Sanjay had addressed why his father was missing from official movie events, noting that the decision was intentional to keep audience focus squarely on the filmmaking rather than star-powered politics. Reflecting on his father's contemplative demeanor, the young filmmaker had noted, "When you ask him something, he takes 10 seconds to answer." He added that while his father takes his time to evaluate things, he remained confident that the end result would make him proud.
Opening Day Box Office Performance and Theatrical Competition
On the commercial front, industry box office data shows that Sigma recorded an opening-day net earning of 2.35 crore rupees across 1,813 scheduled screenings nationwide, translating to a gross figure of ₹2.70 crore. The directorial debut registered a relatively subdued start at ticket counters, having landed amidst fierce theatrical competition from existing South Indian releases including Vijay Sethupathi's Batta, Fahadh Faasil's Don't Trouble the Trouble, and Nani's The Paradise.
