Back in the late eighties and early nineties, the Hindi film industry was captivated by the sheer scale of a monumental cinematic venture titled ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’. The high-profile drama featured a stellar cast including Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever, and Jackie Shroff. Announced originally in 1987, the venture was billed as the most expensive motion picture of its time. Initial direction was entrusted to Shekhar Kapoor, but following his departure midway through production, Satish Kaushik stepped in to complete the ambitious project written by Javed Akhtar.
A Hollywood Inspiration Behind Sridevi Wardrobe
The aesthetic vision for the leading lady drew inspiration from international cinema. Costume designer Nita recalled that after watching the 1988 release ‘Coming to America’, she was struck by its visual richness. When Sridevi approached her to design a specific outfit for a musical sequence, the designer proposed an extravagant look featuring feathers and elaborate ornamentation. Visiting Crawford Market to source unique materials, she combined chain mail, stones, rhinestones, and metallic elements to construct a striking headgear and a multi-layered textured skirt.
A Gruelling Twelve Day Shoot for a Single Song
Filming the grand musical sequence demanded immense physical endurance from both the crew and the performers. Production days routinely commenced at nine in the morning and stretched past ten or ten-thirty at night, lasting nearly twelve days in total. Due to the intense choreography, the elaborate costume suffered regular wear and tear. The designer spent every night repairing broken elements, reattaching feathers, and polishing the jewelry before returning the wardrobe to the set the following morning.
Intricate Craftsmanship and Technical Challenges
The completed garment stood as a remarkable feat of hand-crafted artistry. It incorporated roughly 800 metal pieces featuring Egyptian palmette motifs, painstakingly assembled alongside rhinestones and delicate detailing. Even Sridevi herself initially doubted whether such an ambitious creative concept could be successfully translated into reality. The production underscored how visionary ideas require exceptional dedication and meticulous craftsmanship to materialize on screen.
A Dark Tale of Revenge and Box Office Ruin
The storyline followed the vengeance of two orphaned children whose parents were brutally murdered by a ruthless criminal named Jugran. Despite grand ambitions and extensive production efforts, the theatrical release proved to be a historic box office disaster. Boney Kapoor, who served as the producer, endured severe financial turbulence and crushing debt in the wake of the film's commercial collapse in 1993.
