Veteran Bollywood playback singer Kumar Sanu opened up about one of the most terrifying and stressful experiences of his musical career, recalling the time he was compelled to sing in front of an underworld don under the shadow of fear and intimidation in Dubai. This incident remains the most harrowing memory of his professional life, one that he still cannot erase from his mind.
Reflecting on that turbulent era, Kumar Sanu shared that the Hindi film industry was heavily influenced and allegedly controlled by the underworld during those years. Speaking on Subhjit Ghosh's podcast, he recalled that outright rejecting such requests back then was practically synonymous with inviting mortal danger upon oneself.
The Fear at a Private Dubai Event
Recalling the specific incident, Kumar Sanu explained that the environment within the film and music fraternity during those years was entirely distinct and suffocating. He was gripped by intense fear because the entire industry operated under a parallel syndicate. When the host asked him during the discussion whether that era was so perilous that prominent music industry figure Gulshan Kumar was killed despite his immense stature, it highlighted the sheer gravity of the situation.
Compliance Out of Pure Survival
Addressing this, Kumar Sanu noted that he could completely understand that fear and the surrounding reality since he had witnessed such intimidating atmospheres firsthand at several events. This was precisely why, despite wanting to, he could never muster the courage to turn down performances at such gatherings. He knew all too well that defying such requests carried a heavy price. In those moments, agreeing to their demands was deemed the most practical and safe option available.

When asked how he managed to navigate himself through such a perilous period, the playback singer revealed that he developed decent acquaintances with some of these influential figures who assured him of protection and help if any trouble arose. Nevertheless, Kumar Sanu maintained a safe distance from such individuals and never encouraged their interference in his professional or personal affairs.
Legal Move to Protect Persona
Aside from recounting his past experiences, Kumar Sanu recently made headlines in the legal arena by approaching the Delhi High Court. He petitioned the court to secure his personality and publicity rights, demanding that his name, voice, likeness, and identity must not be commercially exploited without his explicit prior consent.
