Anticipation surrounding the third and final chapter of the Drishyam franchise has reached a fever pitch among moviegoers. Ajay Devgn is set to reprise his celebrated role as Vijay Salgaonkar on the big screen on 2 October. The filmmakers had previously indicated that this narrative venture advances substantially beyond the events of the preceding two chapters, bringing plot turns that audiences could scarcely envision. Just ahead of its theatrical debut, Devgn took an unexpected initiative that further piqued audience curiosity: he initiated direct contact with a 66-year-old screen icon, seeking his prior viewing and creative feedback on the completed project.
Reaching Out to the Malayalam Cinema Stalwart
The veteran artist whose perspective Devgn sought is Malayalam cinema titan Mohanlal. Speaking at an interactive panel during FICCI Frames, Devgn shared that he personally placed a telephone call to Mohanlal. Devgn was keen for Mohanlal to see this third instalment before its public release. For Devgn, securing Mohanlal's thoughts is far more than an empty industry courtesy; it represents creative validation from the actor who originally established the character of Georgekutty and turned the narrative universe into a benchmark.
Explaining how the conversation unfolded, Devgn noted that Mohanlal was away on holiday at the time, which temporarily prevented him from watching the screening copy right away. Even so, the two seasoned performers remained in regular touch, with Mohanlal expected to view the production shortly. Devgn highlighted how much he appreciated Mohanlal's warm receptivity and genuine interest in discussing the project. Devgn reiterated that having the endorsement of the person who gave the original franchise its enduring cultural imprint meant a great deal to the Hindi creative unit.
Screenplay Hurdles and Scrapped Story Drafts
Reflecting on the rigorous development cycle of the third instalment, Devgn addressed the substantial creative hurdles encountered by the writing team. Crafting a convincing progression for a tightly wound suspense thriller like Drishyam is exceptionally intricate. The core requirement was to organically advance the plot from where the second film left off, rather than merely tacking on another routine murder investigation simply to deliver a trilogy.
Devgn revealed that the director and screenwriters explored multiple conceptual pathways before landing on the final structure. Around four different scripts were developed and subsequently discarded after failing to meet the high benchmark set by earlier entries. Only after rigorous refinement did the team finalize a screenplay packed with the franchise's hallmark twists, shifts, and high-tension revelations. Because the narrative of this Hindi chapter branches into distinct directions, Devgn felt it was critical to present the finished work to the original franchise lead.
Choosing to Conclude the Thriller Franchise on a High
Discussing the choice to draw the franchise to a definitive close, Devgn offered candid reflections after having recently viewed the entire feature himself. He emphasized that sustaining narrative tension across multiple mystery sequels is an arduous undertaking for any creative team.
We want to end this franchise on a high note.
Devgn expressed his firm personal belief that the completed film turns out even stronger than Drishyam 2. Given that assessment, the makers concluded that bringing Vijay Salgaonkar's journey to a decisive conclusion at its creative peak was the most honest and impactful resolution for the audience.
