The traditional festival of Veer Phooli was celebrated with intense devotion and joy across the Marwar region of Rajasthan, shortly before the festival of Rakshabandhan. In Somesar and numerous surrounding villages within Pali district, sisters observed a day long fast wishing for the long life, good health, prosperity, and overall protection of their brothers. This festival stands as a distinct cultural tradition in Marwar, where sisters perform prayers and fasts specifically to ward off all potential misfortunes and dangers facing their brothers.
The Unique Ritual of Bhaat and Breaking the Fast
The centerpiece of the Veer Phooli festival is its heartwarming evening tradition. After observing a rigorous fast throughout the day, sisters wait for their brothers to arrive. In the evening, the brother, accompanied by his wife, visits the sister's residence carrying an array of freshly prepared traditional delicacies, cooked dishes, and sweets. In Marwari culture, this ceremonial presentation of food and gifts is known as filling the Bhaat. The sisters break their day long fast only after accepting the food and sweets brought by their brother and sister-in-law. In many instances, sisters travel to their brothers' homes, while in others, brothers personally deliver the food, ensuring that this sacred custom is fulfilled with deep affection.
Widespread Celebrations Across Pali Villages
The festive spirit of Veer Phooli was prominently visible not only in Somesar but also across several adjoining villages and rural hamlets in Pali district. Enthusiastic celebrations were reported from Nimbara, Busi, Tewali, Jawali, Sodawas, Bhadarlau, Indarwada, Deoli Pabuji, Sawalta, Khond, Sapuni, Pratapgarh, Gudajetsingh, Rungdi, and Duthariya. From early morning, households began spiritual preparations, and by evening, village streets were filled with traditional festive cheer as families gathered to observe the rituals together.
A Symbol of Sibling Affection and Family Harmony
While festivals such as Teej, Karwa Chauth, and Ahoi Ashtami are traditionally observed by women for the longevity of their spouses or children, Veer Phooli is uniquely dedicated to the well-being and protection of brothers. Through rituals performed during this festival, sisters pray for the removal of all obstacles from their brothers' paths. Beyond individual prayers, the festival reinforces familial ties, promotes social cohesion, and keeps ancient Marwari heritage alive across generations.
