Kesariya Kalakand, the saffron-flavored traditional sweet from Jhoomri Tilaiya, has earned a place on the national map after securing a Geographical Indication tag. It is the first and only food product from Jharkhand to receive this prestigious certification. The recognition has energized local sweet makers and triggered a wave of curiosity from buyers across the country.
A Rush of Calls and Orders From Across India
Since the GI tag was awarded, demand for Kesariya Kalakand has surged noticeably. People from multiple states are now reaching out directly to sweet shops in Koderma to learn about the product and place orders. Customers are asking about the taste, the unique qualities, and how to get it delivered. The certification has effectively given this traditional sweet a nationwide platform it never had before.
How Kanhaiah Mishthan Played a Key Role
During the GI certification process, samples from several reputed sweet shops in Koderma were submitted for quality and standard testing, and Kanhaiah Mishthan was among them. After meeting all the prescribed requirements, Jhoomri Tilaiya's Kesariya Kalakand received the tag. Abhishek Seth, who runs Kanhaiah Mishthan, noted that earlier customers would simply drop in for regular kalakand. Now they come specifically requesting the GI-tagged Kesariya Kalakand, and many purchase it as a gift for family and friends. He also pointed out that the local water and climate of Koderma are responsible for the distinctive character and flavor that set this sweet apart.
Chocolate and Jaggery Variants Enter the Market
Even before the GI tag, Kanhaiah Mishthan was already offering a sugar-free version of kalakand to cater to health-conscious customers. Now, riding on growing demand and a desire to offer new taste experiences, the shop has launched a chocolate-flavored kalakand and a version made with jaggery. These additions give buyers a modern twist on a recipe that has long been a regional staple.
Price, Delivery, and Shelf Life
Kesariya Kalakand is priced at Rs 520 per kilogram. Orders are being accepted from cities and states that have direct transport connectivity with Koderma, and the sweet is dispatched accordingly. At normal room temperature it stays fresh for approximately 24 hours. When refrigerated, both its quality and flavor remain intact for several days, making it a practical option for customers placing orders from distant locations.
