A new chapter in Portuguese football development has begun with Cristiano Junior earning his first official call-up to the Portugal Under-17 national squad. The 16-year-old forward, who is the son of world-renowned football icon Cristiano Ronaldo, has been selected for the upcoming European Under-17 Championship qualifying campaign, marking another steady progression up the national youth ranks.
Selection in Coach Filipe Ramos' 23-Man Squad
Portugal Under-17 head coach Filipe Ramos confirmed Cristiano Junior among the 23 players chosen to compete in the qualifying fixtures. Cristiano Junior currently sharpens his skills at the Al Nassr youth academy in Saudi Arabia, where his regular competitive exposure has helped maintain his sharp development. Earning a spot in the Under-17 roster provides him an opportunity to demonstrate his abilities against quality international opposition on home turf.
International Track Record Across Under-15 and Under-16 Levels
Cristiano Junior is no stranger to the national setup. He made his international debut for Portugal in May 2025 with the Under-15 team before rapidly progressing into the Under-16 setup. Across both age categories combined, he has made 13 appearances and scored a total of 5 goals.
His individual age-group statistics highlight steady attacking efficiency: in the Under-15 ranks, he scored 2 goals in 4 matches. Later, with the Under-16 squad, he added 3 goals across 9 appearances. He has also replicated that consistency at the club level, registering 3 goals in 7 appearances for the Al Nassr youth team during the current season.
Portugal's Qualifying Schedule in Oeiras
Portugal's path toward the European Under-17 Championship begins on November 11 with an opening clash against Andorra. The squad will then take on Bulgaria on November 14 before wrapping up the group stage against Serbia on November 17.
All three fixtures will be hosted at the Portuguese Football Federation's training facility situated in Oeiras. Under the competition framework, Portugal must finish among the top two teams in their group to secure advancement to the subsequent stage of the tournament.
Carving an Independent Identity Amid Great Expectations
Being the child of one of football history's most celebrated figures naturally draws intense public attention and endless comparisons. Nevertheless, Cristiano Ronaldo has repeatedly made clear that he refuses to impose the weight of his legacy onto his son. In a previous interview, Ronaldo reflected on his son's path, stating, “We will see if my son will become a great footballer. He is not yet.” Ronaldo maintains that his son should forge his own journey and deliver his absolute best in whichever profession he chooses. Stepping onto the pitch for the Under-17 national side now grants Cristiano Junior a prime platform to establish his own name in international football.
