Yamal continued to add entries to his growing list of records. He became the second youngest player in FIFA World Cup history to score the opening goal of a match. The sole player to have achieved that feat at a younger age is the legendary Pelé, who did so in 1958 at just 17 years and 7 months old. Yamal also claimed the distinction of being the youngest European player to have scored in both the Euro Cup and the FIFA World Cup.
Spain Controlled the Game from the First Whistle
After Yamal's early opener, Spain never gave Saudi Arabia a moment to settle. Mikel Oyarzabal added two more goals in rapid succession, scoring in the 21st and 25th minutes to put the European champions 3-0 ahead by half-time. A Saudi Arabia own goal in the second half completed the rout and pushed the final scoreline to 4-0. It was as one-sided as opening fixtures come, a near-perfect statement of intent from Spain.

Gavi scored for Spain at the 2022 World Cup when he was 18 years, 3 months and 18 days old. Now Yamal has joined him with a goal of his own at the age of 18. With two different players having found the net in the World Cup at the age of 18 or under, Spain became the first team in the 96-year history of the FIFA World Cup to achieve that distinction.
Brazil hold a comparable record, with three teenage goalscorers spread across their World Cup history. Spain have now joined that exclusive company of nations with more than one teenager having scored in the tournament, though Brazil's tally of three remains the benchmark.
Gavi Joins Football's Most Exclusive List
While Yamal grabbed the headlines, Gavi quietly made history of his own. The 22-year-old came on as a substitute and by doing so became one of the very few players to have appeared in two FIFA World Cups before turning 22 years old. He joins an illustrious group that includes Pelé, Norman Whiteside, Rigobert Song, Salomon Olembe and Samuel Eto'o.
