Pawan Deep Singh, a native of the Lalkurti area in Ambala Cantt, has demonstrated exceptional athletic excellence abroad by winning the top prize at a premier sporting event. He bagged the gold medal at the National Wushu Championship hosted inside Netball Stadium in Auckland. Organized under the banner of the Wushu Kung Fu Federation of New Zealand, the championship witnessed fierce competition where Singh emerged victorious. His triumph on foreign soil has brought immense pride not only to his household but also to Ambala and the entire state of Haryana, leading to a constant stream of well-wishers arriving at his hometown residence.
Turning Last Year's Silver into Gold
This was not Pawan Deep Singh's maiden appearance in the tournament. He participated in the same national championship last year as well, finishing with a commendable silver medal. Determined to upgrade his podium finish, he worked on his technique and returned this season to claim the championship gold. His athletic journey traces back to his early childhood when, around the age of six, he developed a profound interest in sports. His family consistently backed his ambitions. His father, who worked in the banking sector, was himself a former football player, creating a supportive sporting culture within the household from the beginning.
Mentorship and Community Engagement in India
Before heading overseas, Singh dedicated himself entirely to wushu, developing a professional coaching career in India. He completed a one-year diploma in wushu from NIS Patiala, which fortified his technical and tactical understanding of the martial art. While living in Ambala, he managed his own training academy and worked as a sports coach in a school. Beyond formal training, he actively motivated neighborhood youth to take up sports and stay away from substance abuse, using athletics as a tool for positive community change.
Balancing Full-Time Work with High-Level Training
In 2023, Pawan Deep Singh moved to New Zealand on a work visa. He currently resides in Auckland and earns his living as a patrolling officer with a security firm. Despite the exhausting and rigid shift hours demanded by his security job, he refused to let his athletic career slide. He maintained a rigorous training schedule outside work shifts, paying careful attention to his conditioning and continuing to compete at elite martial arts events across the country.
Celebrations Across the Family and Neighborhood
Reflecting on his milestone, his mother Nirmal Kaur shared that her son had devoted himself to sports starting in the sixth grade. Even while leaving for New Zealand, he had assured his family that demanding working hours would never deter him from practicing his sport. Following his gold medal victory, celebratory calls from relatives, friends, and acquaintances have been pouring in. His brother, Paramjit Singh, highlighted that Pawan had been racking up medals since his school days, having already made his mark at district, state, and national tournaments across India. Although he moved abroad for employment, his devotion to wushu remains as intense as ever.
An Inspiring Milestone for Aspiring Athletes
Sharing his appreciation, former local councillor Naveen Yadav noted that the youth of Lalkurti have previously attained notable distinctions in diverse sports disciplines. With Pawan Deep Singh securing a gold medal in New Zealand, the region's name has now reached an international stage. For a young athlete emerging from a modest locality to carve out an identity through sheer dedication serves as a major source of pride and motivation for the entire community.
