Commuters traveling regularly between Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh have received a major relief update regarding regional connectivity. The construction work on the 6-lane greenfield expressway running between Ambala and Shamli is advancing at a rapid pace, with approximately 70 percent of the project already completed. This upcoming expressway is set to act as a major gamechanger for the transportation network across northern India. Once it becomes fully operational, the lengthy 3-hour journey between Ambala and Shamli will be drastically reduced to a mere 1.5 hours or 90 minutes.
Cost of Rs 4900 Crore and Length of 121.78 Kilometers
The entire infrastructure project involves an expenditure of around Rs 4,900 crore. Spanning a total length of 121.78 kilometers, this high-speed corridor is being jointly constructed by three different building firms. A 75-kilometer stretch of this expressway falls within the state of Haryana, while the remaining 45-kilometer portion lies inside the boundaries of Uttar Pradesh. The construction work commenced in 2023, and according to the set target, the route will be fully opened to vehicular traffic by March 2027.
Districts Covered Along the Route
At present, there is no direct four-lane or expressway link available for traveling from Ambala to Shamli. People are forced to take a lengthy detour via Karnal, where heavy traffic congestion results in wasting more than 3 hours of travel time. The new expressway will originate from the Ambala-Chandigarh road and extend up to Thana Bhawan in Shamli. It will cover four prominent districts of Haryana including Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal, and Yamunanagar. Afterward, it will enter Uttar Pradesh to connect directly with Saharanpur and Shamli districts.
Interconnected Network with Three Major Expressways
The defining feature of this expressway is its multi-connectivity network. It will link three major and vital transportation routes together. At Gogwan Jalalpur in Shamli, it will intersect with the Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Economic Corridor. At Sadalpur, it will connect with the Ambala-Chandigarh and Ambala-Mohali routes. Passing through Ambala, it will also provide direct traffic flow to the Ludhiana-Ambritsar route. This robust interconnectivity will directly benefit travelers commuting from Punjab and Rajasthan alongside Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
World-Class Amenities Along the Way
On the lines of the Delhi-Dehradun expressway, modern rest areas are being constructed along the Ambala-Shamli expressway for the convenience of passengers. Facilities such as fuel pumps, CNG stations, clean restrooms, food courts, restaurants, and advanced vehicle parking and charging points will be available here so that long-distance travelers do not face any difficulties during their journey.
