In a major anti-corruption crackdown in Haryana, the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau has apprehended an inspector of the Crime Investigation Department while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh. The arrested official has been identified as Inspector Rajesh Kumar, who was deployed in the state CID. He allegedly demanded monthly protection money from a commercial transporter in exchange for permitting smooth passage of vehicles ferrying mined minerals between Yamunanagar and Karnal.
Per-Vehicle Extortion Deal Exposed
The operation originated from an official grievance lodged by a transporter based in Karnal. According to the complainant, the CID inspector initially demanded a monthly sum of Rs 10,000 for each commercial vehicle operating across the Yamunanagar to Karnal transport corridor. Following continued negotiations, the accused officer consented on September 19 to reduce his per-truck demand to roughly Rs 7,000 per month. A consolidated list comprising approximately 70 transport vehicles was prepared, and the total monthly payoff was negotiated down to a fixed sum of Rs 5 lakh.
ACB Lays Trap at Umri Chowk
Unwilling to yield to the extortion demands, the transporter approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau and detailed the entire transaction. A vigilance team supervised by Inspector Harjinder Singh, the in-charge of ACB Kurukshetra, initiated an inquiry to verify the authenticity of the complaint. Once the allegations were substantiated through preliminary checks, the enforcement agency prepared a covert trap to catch the inspector red-handed.
Apprehended During Cash Handover
The accused inspector instructed the complainant to travel from Karnal to Kurukshetra to deliver the cash consignment. The meeting venue was scheduled near Umri Chowk in Kurukshetra. ACB personnel in plain clothes positioned themselves strategically around the designated location ahead of the scheduled encounter. The moment the complainant delivered the agreed sum of Rs 5 lakh to Inspector Rajesh Kumar, the surrounding vigilance squad closed in and secured the officer on the spot. The bureau recovered the entire tainted sum and initiated further legal proceedings against the official under relevant anti-corruption provisions.
