Residents of Kanpur have received a major infrastructure boost as the long-awaited Sarainya railway overbridge has finally been thrown open for public traffic. The opening of this crucial link is set to end the daily traffic gridlocks that commuters in the region have endured for years.
Built At A Cost Of 150 Crore Rupees
The newly operational bridge has been constructed with an expenditure of 150 crore rupees. Motorists arriving from the Ganga Baraj direction can now utilize the Sarainya overbridge to travel directly into the heart of Kanpur city. This development significantly eases travel for commuters journeying between Kanpur and neighboring urban centers such as Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Lucknow. Crucially, travelers will no longer find themselves trapped in endless queues whenever the railway crossing gates are shut.
Connecting Ganga Baraj And Azad Marg
Positioned directly over the railway crossing on the Ganga Baraj to Shuklaganj route, the Sarainya ROB starts near Sarainya village, crosses the railway tracks, and descends towards Azad Marg beyond Marhala intersection. This alignment means vehicles coming from Shuklaganj and Azad Marg can bypass the railway crossing entirely and reach Ganga Baraj smoothly via the elevated road.
Four-Lane Structure And Speed Guidelines
To ensure steady traffic flow, the overbridge has been designed as a four-lane thoroughfare spanning approximately 1.13 kilometers in length. Both sides of the bridge feature wide roads measuring seven and a half meters. Because the structure incorporates five distinct bends along its route, authorities have strongly advised motorists to maintain a safe driving speed of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour.
Planning Timeline And Construction Phase
The formal blueprint for constructing the Sarainya overbridge was conceptualized back in the year 2016. At that initial stage, the planned length of the bridge was estimated at 785 meters with a budget of approximately 78 crore rupees. The project secured official clearance in 2020, prompting the commencement of physical construction work. Over time, financial revisions pushed the overall cost up to roughly 150 crore rupees.
Design Alterations And Delays
The project was originally targeted for completion by June 2023. However, recognizing the intense volume of traffic, planners decided to modify the bridge design. While the initial plan was to land the bridge directly at Marhala intersection, anticipated congestion led authorities to extend the structure roughly 350 meters further toward Azad Marg. This design revision increased the total length of the bridge to approximately 1129 meters. Administrative hurdles, budget approvals, and contractor changes also contributed to timeline shifts, before construction pace accelerated under a revised plan in September 2024, followed by a secondary agency stepping in during April 2025 to finish the remaining tasks.
Relief From Frequent Gate Closures
The railway crossing at Sarainya had long been a major bottleneck for local transport. Due to heavy train frequency along the Kanpur to Lucknow rail corridor, the crossing gates used to drop an average of 80 times every single day. Each closure forced drivers to wait for 10 to 15 minutes, triggering massive vehicle backlogs on both sides and occasionally trapping motorists in jams for up to half an hour. The inauguration of the overbridge has immediately relieved congestion along this path.
Assisting Jajmau Bridge Repairs
National Highways Authority of India Director Pankaj Yadav noted that the commissioning of the Sarainya ROB will considerably reduce vehicle pressure on the heavily burdened Jajmau Ganga bridge. Until now, the vast majority of traffic moving between Lucknow and Kanpur relied on the Jajmau bridge as the primary transit artery. With the Sarainya route now active, traffic distribution will improve, allowing essential repair work on the Jajmau bridge to proceed at a faster pace.
State transport authorities are also preparing to route Lucknow and Rae Bareli bound roadways buses through this newly opened corridor following the Diwali festival. According to Regional Manager Mahesh Kumar, preliminary discussions with district administration officials regarding this bus route shift have already been successfully concluded.
