The family of Sumit, who was killed in a police encounter following the murder of Sonipat-based Haryanvi singer Ankit Balyan, has come forward to share their side of the story. Sumit's father, Dharmpal, spoke to the media and stated that his son entered the world of crime only after coming into contact with Mohit. While raising questions about the police encounter, the father also expressed deep anguish over alleged third-degree torture inflicted on his younger son.
Background and Entry into Crime
According to Dharmpal, Sumit had failed his 12th-grade examination and worked as a laborer alongside his father. Sumit first met Mohit roughly two and a half months ago following a triple murder in Sonipat. Mohit frequently visited their home, and the family repeatedly warned Sumit against keeping company with him, but to no avail.
On August 26, Sumit received a phone call, but Mohit did not allow Sumit to take the call. Mohit later informed the family that Sumit had left, though he provided no details regarding his whereabouts. Dharmpal stated that he remains unsure whether money or external pressure motivated Sumit, who left home after changing his clothes without informing his family.
Police Encounter and Allegations of Torture
Dharmpal stated that the Uttar Pradesh police took him and his younger son away on Saturday and dropped them back home late at night. He claimed that the police had assured him Sumit would not be killed in an encounter, prompting questions as to why the encounter took place despite the assurance.
However, the family expressed resignation regarding Sumit's death, with the father noting that his son faced the consequences of his actions. Instead, Dharmpal expressed extreme anger over the alleged mistreatment of his younger son, Yashpal, who studied up to the third grade and installs Wi-Fi systems. The father warned that he would take his own life if his younger son's condition does not improve, questioning the legality of subjecting a minor to such treatment. The singer had been shot dead outside a gym in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh.
