A marriage in Gurugram, Haryana lasted just three months before the husband, working with his girlfriend, allegedly plotted and carried out his wife's murder. Police in the Manesar police station area have arrested the husband, Ankit (25), and his girlfriend, Rajni Devi (38), roughly a month and a half after the killing. Both have now been sent to five days of police custody by a court for further questioning.
A Three Year Affair and a February Wedding
According to police, the roots of this case go back nearly three years. Ankit, who ran a tobacco shop in Manesar, and Rajni Devi, who worked at a beauty parlour in the same area, first met through work, and their relationship gradually turned romantic. Rajni had been living in a rented house in Manesar for a long time. During this period, in February 2026, Ankit married another woman, Madhu, even as his relationship with Rajni continued.
A Missing Persons Complaint That Cracked the Case
The case came to light on 22 May, when a woman filed a complaint at the Manesar police station saying her 22 year old daughter had been missing since 21 May. That daughter was the same woman who had married Ankit in February 2026. The mother told police that the family tried searching for her on their own and also contacted her in laws, but got no satisfactory answer. Suspicion eventually fell on the husband and his family, prompting the police complaint, and a case was registered under the relevant sections.
Shot Dead, Then a Premeditated Plot Comes to Light
On the same day the complaint was filed, 22 May, the missing woman's body was recovered from a room in Manesar. The investigation found she had been shot dead, after which murder related sections were added to the case. As the probe progressed, a senior Gurugram police officer said that on 21 May, Ankit, acting on a pre planned conspiracy, took his wife to Rajni's rented room, where he shot and killed her. The investigation also found that the pistol used in the murder had been bought by Ankit from Uttar Pradesh about two months before the incident, indicating the killing had been planned well in advance.
A Run Through Haridwar to Nepal, Then Arrest
Ankit and Rajni Devi fled immediately after the murder. According to police, the two first went to Haridwar and from there crossed into Nepal. They stayed hidden in Nepal for roughly a month and a half. They were finally arrested on 30 June, when they returned to India. Both accused were produced in court, which sent them to five days of police custody for further interrogation and to help recover evidence. Police are now questioning them about the weapon used, how it was procured, and whether anyone else played a role in the conspiracy.
