A midnight shootout between Haryana Police and a criminal gang in Gurugram left four shooters from the Deepak Nandal gang dead and one critically wounded, while three police personnel were also injured in the exchange of fire. The encounter took place in the A-Block area of Sushant Lok, where Crime Branch teams had cornered five shooters from the gang.
How the gang was surrounded in Sushant Lok
Police had received prior intelligence that shooters from the Deepak Nandal gang were planning a major crime in the Sushant Lok area. The Crime Branch had been tipped off by the police control room about a suspicious Scorpio vehicle carrying armed men. Acting on this input, teams cordoned off the entire area. As soon as the Crime Branch team reached Sushant Lok, the gang members opened fire with sophisticated weapons at the home of a local businessman. The moment they spotted the police, the gang turned their weapons on the officers, triggering an exchange of fire from both sides. More than 20 rounds were fired during the encounter.
Five shooters had come to collect extortion money
Initial investigation revealed that the five shooters from the Deepak Nandal gang had arrived in Sushant Lok to extort money from a property dealer. The businessman targeted in the attack had been receiving a continuous stream of extortion messages from a wanted gangster based abroad. The Crime Branch had already got wind of the plot, which is why the team had begun tracking the area in advance and managed to corner the shooters on the spot.
Shooters opened fire despite warning to surrender
The Crime Branch team warned the cornered shooters to surrender, but instead of complying, the gang members opened fire on the police team and attempted to flee the scene. Acting in self-defence and to apprehend the criminals, the police fired back, hitting all five shooters. All of them were rushed to a private super-speciality hospital, where doctors examined them and declared four of the five criminals dead. The fifth shooter is in critical condition and remains under treatment at the hospital.
Three police personnel also hit by bullets
Three Gurugram Police personnel were also wounded by gunfire during the encounter. The injured officers were rushed to hospital immediately and are currently undergoing treatment, with doctors keeping a close watch on their condition. Once the gunfight ended, police and the FSL, the Forensic Science Laboratory team, sealed off the entire area to collect evidence. Investigators are now also trying to establish the identity of the wanted gangster based abroad who was allegedly directing the extortion attempt, and to determine his exact links to the Deepak Nandal gang.
