The entire country is currently witnessing the severe impact of the monsoon season. With the monsoon having made its presence felt nationwide, conditions resembling flooding are emerging across various regions. From Delhi-NCR to Mumbai and Surat, streets are submerged in water, and storm drains and rivers are overflowing. According to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the next 48 hours are critical regarding the prevailing weather patterns.
Atmospheric Drivers of Severe Weather
A monsoon trough currently stretches from the Bay of Bengal to northwest Rajasthan. Concurrently, a well-marked low-pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and southwest Uttar Pradesh, combined with active monsoon winds, is exerting a massive influence across North, East, and Central India. This climatic convergence is the primary reason for the warnings issued for heavy rainfall, high-velocity winds, and localized hailstorms in states ranging from Delhi-NCR to Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Rajasthan.
High Alert Across 18 States
For July 10, the IMD has warned of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds reaching 80 to 85 kilometers per hour across 18 states. In hilly regions, there is a significant risk of landslides and rising river water levels, while plains are bracing for waterlogging, traffic congestion, and potential crop damage. Furthermore, Skymet has forecast moderate to heavy rains for Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and the northeastern states. Fishing operations have been advised against in coastal areas due to rough sea conditions.
Forecast for Delhi-NCR
Delhi and its surrounding areas are expected to face the most active weather on July 10. The IMD has placed the capital under an alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and winds blowing at up to 70 kilometers per hour. Temperatures are expected to peak at 33 degrees Celsius with a minimum of 27 degrees Celsius. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay clear of open spaces, weak structures, or trees during lightning.
Regional Weather Impact
States including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, and Kerala are all under heavy rain alerts. In Uttar Pradesh, districts such as Meerut, Aligarh, Kanpur, and Lucknow are facing warnings of heavy rain accompanied by 80 km/h winds. Bihar, including Patna, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur, remains on high alert for lightning. Similarly, in Jharkhand, districts like Ranchi and Bokaro are expected to experience heavy rainfall with winds gusting between 60 and 70 km/h. West Bengal will also see an escalation in weather activity on July 10 and 11.
